UK-T1-RAL LHCONE Workshop Robin Tasker 10 February 2014

Content 1.UK Networking – Janet 2.RAL Core Network Developments 3.UK sites (GridPP) Activities

Janet6 was launched in November 2013 “... has been designed to address future demands for high-capacity connectivity, enabling vast amounts of data to be exchanged in seconds. Designed specifically for research and education” “Janet6 is highly scalable up to 8.8 Terabits of capacity and uses state-of-the-art 100Gigabit Ethernet technology.”  Long term (10-15 years) contract for dark fibre - May see two generations of transmission equipment  Janet-managed transmission equipment lighting the dark fibre - Previously transmission management was done by a telco provider -No third party between Janet and transmission equipment manufacturer -Flexibility to deploy new transmission technologies  Investigating requirements for VPN-like (e.g. LHCONE) services

UK Sites Perspective 1.The GridPP “Network Forward Look” document is being revised. This review will scope “readiness” of UK sites. Pete Clarke is the editor. 2.Next funding round has started for the period 2015 – 2018 with the GridPP5 bid being developed. The outcome of course is not yet known. 3.UK Tier 1 currently has internal data flows to 100G with flows to the wide area often exceeding 10G for many hours. Tier 1 connects to the RAL Core network with resilient 40G. 4.In the period to 2018, 100G will be required within the RAL Core network and beyond into Janet. This is technically achievable now. 5.Currently the OPN connects with 2*10G and to 2018 this is projected to double, and the bid reflects this requirement 6.All of this (and more) in a climate of economic austerity
