1 RedIRIS NOVA The new infrastructure
of the Spanish National Research and Education Network 1

2 RedIRIS Evolution NOVA
Since 1988, the mission of RedIRIS has been to provide advance connectivity services to the Spanish research and academic community. In order to achieve this goal, RedIRIS has implemented different generations of a national high-speed backbone. NOVA 1988 1989 1990 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2 2

3 The next step in RedIRIS evolution: RedIRIS NOVA
RedIRIS NOVA will be the new RedIRIS national infrastructure: a dark-fibre network with optical equipment, which will increase very significantly RedIRIS transmission capacity, as well as its ability to deploy new services in a flexible way. Dark-fibre networks increase transmission capacity and favour the introduction of innovative services, all for a long-term cost inferior to that of leased capacity Nearly all European NRENs already have dark-fibre in all or part of their backbones, and are promoting cross-border fibre connections among themselves RedIRIS strategic decision to deploy a dark-fibre was taken in 2006, and its being implemented now (on-going public procurement through competitive dialogue) Budgeted cost: 130M€ for at least 10 years (with 55 M€ from EDRF funds) NOVA New network deployment Starts new network planning 2006 2007 2008 2009 2011 2020 3

4 Main features of RedIRIS-NOVA
Dark fibre network contracted for a period of at least 10 years. IRU (“Indefeasible right of use”) Provided by telcos and maintained by them Advantages: Fibre cost is not related to the communications capacity, and the yearly cost of the network ends up being smaller than with the current leased-capacity model A dark fibre network provides much more bandwidth, and allows for a more efficient use of the resources. It allows the Spanish research and academic community to participate in next generation e-science projects Funding sources (138 MM€) MICINN European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) – but only in certain regions (“Comunidades Autónomas”) Additional funding from some regional Governments RedIRIS-NOVA will also provide an ideal environment for the development of new telecommunications services and protocols 4

5 Technical Requirements
RedIRIS-NOVA will consist of a physical network (optical mash with automatic restoration) and several logical networks (for projects and regional academic networks). Several physical POPs per region Regeneration points each 80Km Fiber: ITU G.652B or G.655 Installed after 1994 Maintenance included Apt for deployment of 40 Gbps or 100 Gbps links Optical equipment Automatic restoration 80 channels of 10Gbps Ports: colorless & directionless Several logical networks RedIRIS One node per region Regional academic networks Network for projects 5 Reunión CRUE-TIC Santander
