Percentages - VAT 1. Valued Added Tax (VAT) is a tax that is charged at a rate of 17½ of an items initial cost. Calculate the VAT that is charged on an item with an initial cost of £120 17½% = 10% + 5% + 2½ 10% of 120 = 12 5% of 120 = 6 2½% of 120 = 3 17½% of £120 = = £21
