8-5 Sales Tax Sales tax is an additional amount of money charged on items that people buy. Local, state, and federal government receives this money The total cost of an item is the regular price PLUS the sales tax (increase in cost). · Remember- In real life, tax is always rounded up to the next cent.

How to find sales tax… A set of golf balls sells for $19.98and the sales tax is 5.75%. What is the total cost of the set? First, find the sales tax. Next, add the sales tax to the regular price. Last, write a sentence to answer the question. The total cost of the golf balls is $21.13. 5.75% of 19.98=0.0575 · 19.98= Sales tax = 1.15 1.15 + 19.98=21.13

8-5 Discount (part 1) You are buying a hoodie that has a price of $39.60. Aeropostle is having a 33% off sale (discount). What is the cost of the hoodie? –Find 33% of $39.60. –Round to the nearest cent. –Subtract the discount from the original price. –Write a sentence. 0.33 × 39.60 = 13.068 $13.07 $39.60 – 13.07 = $26.53 The hoodie will cost $26.53 after the 33% discount.

8-5 Discount Is the amount by which the regular price of an item is reduced. The sale price is the regular price MINUS the discount (decrease in cost). Once you have found the discount, make sure that you change the decimal to a percent.

How to find percent of discount… A sports watch with an original price of $86 is on sale for $60.20. What is the percent of discount? First, find the AMOUNT of discount (original – sale). 86 – 60.20 =25.80 (This is the same as finding the percent decrease.) Words Variable Equation Solve Final Answer $25.80 is what percent of $86? Let p represent the percent. 25.80 = p ·86 25.80 = p · 86 86 86 = 0.3 = p Don’t forget to change the decimal to a percent. The percent of discount is 30%. Next, use the percent equation to find the percent discount.

Multi-step Think back to the hoodie that you were buying from Aeropostle... The price of the hoodie is $39.60. The discount is 33% off. Now, let’s figure the total cost after sales tax… 6.5% Sales Tax Find 6.5% of 26.53. Round to the nearest cent. Add the sales tax to the Sale Price. We found that the hoodie will cost $26.53 after the 33% discount. 0.065 × 26.53= 1.72445 $1.72 $1.72 + 26.53 = $28.25
