DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Cells Cells and Organisms Multicellular Organisms

Multicellular Organisms – The Big Ideas Simple multicellular organisms are made up of a collection of similar cells that work together. Complex multicellular organisms have different types of tissue made up of one cell. In complex animals and plants, cells are organized into systems. Systems perform different tasks and contain unique types of cells that allow for unique tasks.

Multicellular Organisms – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Seeing Cells. It will also help if they have:Seeing Cells Seen a variety of living things. Learned that all living things are made up of cells.

Multicellular Organisms – Common Misconceptions Sponges are plants that live at the bottom of the ocean. Reality: Colorful sea sponges found at the bottom of the ocean are classified as multicellular animals, not plants.

Multicellular Organisms – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Multicellular Organisms. Reading Passage: How Cells Work TogetherHow Cells Work Together eBooks: What Are You Made of?What Are You Made of? Video Segment: Types of Cells: Human CellsTypes of Cells: Human Cells Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Multicellular Organisms Instructional Ideas Read the passage, What Are You Made Of?What Are You Made Of? –Assign students to groups of two. –Ask students to use books from your library to research the many different kinds of cells found in the body. Ask students to make a list of the different types of cells. –Share the lists as a class. Create a class list and hang it on the wall for the duration of the study on cells.

Multicellular Organisms – Instructional Activities Show the students a picture of a Sponge at the bottom of the ocean. Ask, “Is this a plant or an animal?” Discuss student responses. –Watch the video segment, Sponges: The Simplest Multicellular Animal.Sponges: The Simplest Multicellular Animal
