DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 11 KEY ACTIONS addressing explicitly formulated economic and social objectives of a European nature with a problem-solving approach aimed at mobilising the resources of various relevant disciplines, technologies and know-how using the whole range of activities, ranging from basic research to development and demonstration prepared and implemented in close consultation with the scientific community, industry and all relevant research end-users

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 12 KEY ACTIONS EUROPEAN CHALLENGES SELECTED ISSUES ANTICIPATED DELIVERABLES RTD RESOURCES TO BE MOBILIZED

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 13 Key action II: Control of infectious diseases RTD objectives development of improved or novel vaccines, especially against viral diseases, including support of clinical trials new / improved strategies to identify and control infectious diseases, directed at treatment & prevention public health and care-delivery systems, notably management, prevention and surveillance aspects Societal aims to combat established, emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases, both in humans and animals to improve quality of life through improved prevention and treatment to reduce healthcare costs to society

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 14 RTD Activities of a Generic Nature & Support to Infrastructures Support for research Infrastructures Biological collections, Clinical research facilities, Facilities for aquaculture and fishery research, Pre-clinical research facilities, Biological information resources C hronic & degenerative (esp. cancer & diabetes), cardio-vascular diseases, and rare diseases. Research into the genome & diseases of genetic origin. Public health & health services research. Neurosciences. Biomedical ethics & bioethics Socio-economic aspects of life sciences & technologies Research relating to the disabled.

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 15 Strategic aspects of implementation The emergence of a Biosociety and commensurate policy commitment 1.CONCENTRATION on strategic issues for the EU 2.FLEXIBILITY in programme and project management 3.TRANSPARENCY of the actors and means of action

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 16 ROAD MAP: Principle Call for proposals Not open for submission

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 17 Strategic aspects of implementation The emergence of a Biosociety and commensurate policy commitment 1.CONCENTRATION on strategic issues for the EU 2.FLEXIBILITY in programme and project management 3.TRANSPARENCY of the actors and means of action 4.COORDINATION with policies, actions, agencies and national R&D

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 19 Implementation modalities Shared cost actions To obtain new knowledge likely to be useful either to develop new or significantly improve existing products, processes and services Demonstration projects To prove the technical viability of technologies that cannot be commercialised directly Combined projects To combine both a research and demonstration component Concerted actions To co-ordinate national RTD projects in order to exchange experience acquired, expand research efforts and disseminate results Support for networks To bring together manufacturers, users, universities and research centres concerned with the diffusion or transfer of innovation around a given scientific and technological objective SME specific measures To facilitate the participation of Small and Medium Enterprises in FP V Marie Curie Training fellowships To strengthen the human research potential in Europe

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 20 A new concept : the cluster of projects Definition : a group of RTD projects providing the necessary critical mass to address a major objective within the thematic programme Objectives : to promote multidisciplinarity, maximise European added value and facilitate the optimisation of resources and the exploitation of results Modalities : A priori clusters can be submitted by linking several single RTD projects (RTD, demonstration, combined projects) Clusters can also be built a posteriori by bringing together several selected single RTD projects or adding a single RTD proposal to an existing cluster

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 21 Proposal Evaluation NO GO Contribution to EU social objectives Community added value Economic development and S&T prospects GO Scientific excellence Management YES Eligibility NO

DG XII - Life Sciences - Coordination 22 Whats different from FP4? In FP4, one of the evaluation criteria was to consider whether or not proposals were in the scope of the scientific fields, as described in the work programme In FP5, this is replaced by whether or not proposals match the socio-economic objectives of the key action, as described in the work programme
