Air Transport System JTI CLEAN SKY Propriatary Information

The Political Commitment Report of the Group of Personalities : Vision for 2020 (January 2001) Strategic Aerospace Review for 21st century (July 2002)

Highly Customer oriented ATS Highly time-efficient ATS Vision 2020 Challenges Vision 2020 (January 2001) To meet Society’s needs To achieve global leadership for Europe ACARE October 2002 : The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) 5 Challenges Quality and Affordability Environment Safety Air Transport System Efficiency Security October 2004 : The SRA 2 High level Target Concepts Very Low Cost ATS Ultra Green ATS Highly Customer oriented ATS Highly time-efficient ATS Ultra Secure ATS 22nd Century

The path to ACARE goals Efficient, quiet, low emissions engine 50% Fuel consumption / CO2 reduction Breakthrough Efficient, quiet, low emissions engine Datum 2000 2010 2020

This is a market failure Need for a new approach Ambitious challenges towards Green ATS calls for a quantum leap in performance The high level of technical risk associated with step changes is too great for industry alone: This is a market failure Without a change in research approach the next innovation will remain evolutionary instead of revolutionary: SRA goals will not be delivered The Clean Sky JTI will enable the delivery of the disruptive technologies and new architectures necessary to meet the environmental challenges

Clean Sky will meet EC criteria for JTI Real European Added Value Enable long term policy supported by a commitment of all stakeholders Large scale programme(s) that may cover the complete chain from research and technological developments to close to market activities Technological breakthrough Managed like an industrial program with specific governance rules agreed by the parties involved improving efficiency and decreasing the administrative burden Clear definition of deliveries and responsibilities and the monitoring of achievements Flexible implementation in a coherent approach to fulfil the objectives Avoid fragmentation and build-up critical mass Several sources of funding Not possible with current instruments

Industry View of the Clean Sky JTI Validation Opportunities / Constraints Big Technology Steps / High Risk Validation of Quantum Leaps Linked to Radical Architecture/Configuration Changes High Interference of Different Disciplines and Technologies on A/C Level Real In-service Environment Medium Technology Steps / Medium Risk Validation of big technology changes within a discipline and (partial) multi-Disciplinary technology improvements High interference of different technologies on a component level Good simulators of In-service environment Small Technology Steps / Low Risk Validation of incremental, extrapolated technology steps. Isolated technology validation Simulation of in-service conditions and interference as good as possible. Partially validated within product development phase. Full Scale Flying Demonstrator JTI Engine technology Demonstrator Component Flying Demonstrator Ground Validation tests Scope : Component, Single Discipline (E.g.
