AGES: Activating and guiding the engagement of seniors Intervention Training

Learning outcomes  To deliver the intervention consistently:  Become familiar with the training manual.  Understand the training protocol.  Have a working knowledge of tasks and activities for each session.  Be able to use this trainer’s manual alongside IT manuals and step-by-step guides for the different forms of social media ( , Skype, Facebook, online communities).

User Pathway  Pre-intervention assessment  3-months training and monitoring:  1-month intensive training; 3 sessions/week  1-month initial monitoring; weekly contact with skype and in person.  1-month final monitoring; fortnightly contact with Skype.  Post-intervention assessment

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Keep sessions to 90 minutes, but:  include short breaks as needed, and  set the pace to meet the user’s needs.  Week 1 goals:  Introduce user to computer and software.  Train the user to interact with .  Begin collation of life history materials.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 1, Session 1:  Introductions, project purpose, session aims.  Identify where computer will be kept and start setting up (Jason’s session).  Go through computer basics (45 mins): e.g., turning computer on/off, use of mouse.  Introduce life history (45 mins): ask people about their past (family, friendships, work and other history), discuss the importance of sharing our past.  Show the user their Forget-Me-Not Folder and how it can be used to store information.  Ask user to identify materials to be kept in their folder, and to start collecting them for your next session.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 1, Session 2:  Ensure you have some contacts.  Introduce (45 mins): using Jason’s guide, show the software & how its used by  sending yourself an  have the user send you an ,  Have user send one to family/friend requesting attachment (e.g., photo.  Alert user to SPAM and importance of opening and responding to s from people known.  Homework: respond to one of your s, and to send another to family or friend.  Introduce user to Forget-Me-Not folder, how to store images/materials collected, and to Jason’s guide (45 mins).

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 1, Session 3:  In preparation, ensure you have sent an with 2 attachments.  The purpose of this session is largely consolidation of learning. Thus, check  use of  collection of life history materials,  storage of materials into Forget-Me-Not.  Turn to attachments, showing the user how to open and download, and store.  Show how to attach a document/photo to an .  Homework: user to continue sending s, including one with attachment.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 2, Goals:  Introduce user to Skype.  Introduce user to Facebook  Continue collation of materials for Forget- Me-Not.  Be familiar with Jason’s user guides for Skype and Facebook, to present in Week 2 with training

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 2, Session 4:  Have Skype contacts in preparation.  Check on homework from previous week.  Introduction to Skype (60 mins): show software, setting up address book, make a Skype call (pre- arranged).  Homework: user to respond to a Skype call that you make, ask the user to make a Skype call to family member or friend.  Return to Forget-Me-Not (30 mins), checking that new materials have been entered and, if not, provide further help. Talk about what they could add to their folders.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 2, Session 5:  Check on homework.  Introduction to Facebook (60 mins): show software, show own page, add user as friend, create page for user and add yours and any other known people as friends.  Homework: user to find out whether family or friends are on facebook, obtain contacts and add to address book (return to next session is unable).  Return to Forget-Me-Not (30 mins) and review progress. Discuss and show how these materials could be added to facebook page.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 2, Session 6:  Check on homework, and help with adding facebook friends if required.  As in the previous week, this session is about consolidation of learning. Thus,  Check use of Skype and facebook,  Review use  Check collation and storage of life history materials,  Continue practicing with , Skype and facebook, as required.  Homework: Encourage user to continue working with , skype and facebook; getting in touch yourself through these media if you feel more confidence is needed.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 3, Goals:  Review use of , skype, facebook.  Introduce user to network sites & online chat rooms  Continue collation of materials for Forget- Me-Not.  Be familiar with Jason’s user guides for network sites, to present in Week 3 with training

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 3, Session 7:  As there has been considerable learning over the last two weeks, the aim of this session is to provide time for consolidation of learning and identification of areas of weakness. Thus:  check use of , Skype, facebook and completion of homework exercises,  note confidence with each media type, and  allocate time as needed to practice further in areas of weakness.  Set homework tasks or activities (variations of previous exercises) to help consolidate user learning.  Check collation and storage of life history materials (allow 20 mins).

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 3, Session 8:  In preparation, search relevant sites that would be of interest to the user (based on what you know about their background, hobbies and interests)  Introduce network sites & online communities (allow 60 mins):  Show how to search for common senior’s sites or those of interest & have user search.  Show how to access, bookmark and make a comment or contribute to sites. Have user practice this.  Homework: continue searching sites, bookmarking relevant sites and making contributions as they wish.  Check collation and storage of life history materials (allow mins).

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 3, Session 9:  The primary aim is to consolidate learning in Week 3. Thus,  Review use of the internet, online sites, any bookmarking and ask user to show any contributions they may have made.  Continue practicing with further examples if user has encountered difficulty.  Review use of other media ( , Skype, facebook), following up with more concrete examples if needed.  Encourage continued use of all media.  Check collation and storage of life history materials (allow 15 mins).

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 4, Goals:  Review use of , skype, facebook, and network sites.  Finalize contents of Forget-Me-Not folder.  Ensure user is familiar with all of Jason’s user guides for reference as required.

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 4, Sessions 10 & 11:  Use these sessions flexibly, planning them around meeting users individual needs.  Identify media that the user is less confident using, and particular questions the user has about their use.  Spend time practicing with these media; either repeating previous examples, or introducing new ones.  If no problem areas identified, simply review progress and use. Identify new areas to tackle within each of the media as time allows.  Check collation and storage of life history materials in each session (allow15 mins).

Intensive Training: Weeks 1 to 4  Week 4, Session 12:  Devote this session primarily to Forget-Me-Not.  Review contents of folder to ensure there are sufficient materials for sharing over the next 1-2 months.  Check user can add materials independently.  Check user can share information; either via facebook, attachments.  Encourage continued use of this and all other media.  Ensure user is aware that the number of sessions will decrease, and for the next month you will be in weekly contact (alternating between and skype). Book sessions.  Remind them that in between they can if they have questions or come across difficulties.

Initial Monitoring: Weeks 5 to 8  The goal in these weeks is to monitor progress with the media:  Review use of , skype, facebook, and network sites.  Check on use of Forget-Me-Not folder contents.  Attend to any questions user may have and attend to any areas requiring further practice.

Initial Monitoring: Weeks 5 to 8  The sequence of contacts is as follows:  Week 5: Skype  Week 6: in person  Week 7: Skype  Week 8: in person  Ensure user is aware of reduced contact schedule in the next month, which will be fortnightly.

Final Monitoring: Weeks 9 to 12  The goal is the same in these weeks, but you will be touching base on a fortnightly basis only via skype to monitor progress. As in the previous period:  Review use of , skype, facebook, network sites & Forget-Me- Not.  Attend to any questions user may have and attend to any areas requiring further practice.  Prepare user for the reduction in sessions, the follow-up assessment session and bid your farewells.

Final Monitoring: Weeks 9 to 12  Possible questions:

User confidentiality and engagement  As information shared may be personal we need to bear confidentiality issues in mind; alerting users to the fact they have a choice in the information they share and with whom.  As we are interested in the forms of media users engage with and why, you will be asked to complete a weekly checklist noting this information.
