Enough potential for biomass based energy production, but there are barriers to overcome: Knowledge barriers Supply barriers Demand barriers Financial barriers Barriers

Five workpackages: WP1 Management and coordination WP2 Best Practices and Regional Biomass studies WP3 Development of a Standardized Biomass Energy Model WP4 Biomass Energy Plans WP5 Dissemination and involvement of key actors Project set-up

Establishment of: Project group Steering committee Regional Stakeholder Committee Different ways of communication WP1 – Management and coordination

Collection of three best practices per region Regional studies Groene Woud; A survey of the potential and necessary maximum production capacity at region scale and the impact it has on sustainable regional development goals A location scan A study of possibilities for further expansion An analysis of legal and practical obstacles for implementation as well as solutions for this WP2 – Best Practices and Regional Biomass Studies

Regional studies Andalucía; Two pre feasibility studies for a large scal biomass plant using vine pruning residues; for the collection of forestry residues and usage in smaller- scale CHP boilers. WP2 – Best Practices and Regional Biomass Studies

Regional studies Malopolska; analysis of current resources and possible future potential; model based problem analysis; study of the profitability of an investment with various types of fuel used; comparison of different technical solutions; assessment of the potential environmental effects using biomass for energy production compared to traditional energy sources; Study on the implementation of model technical solutions starting from processing biomass at the local level. WP2 – Best Practices and Regional Biomass Studies

Regional studies Stockholm Region; Analysis of suitable logistic solutions (together with energy companies) Study on logistics of biomass substrates and planning of adequate treatment and production sites for the increasing production of biogas. WP2 – Best Practices and Regional Biomass Studies

WP3 contains: A study into barriers and possibilities in biomass collection and distribution at the local/regional level; A regional analysis in which treats, chances and solutions for a sustainable implementation for the model are analysed; The ecological, social and economic sustainability of the new model will be looked upon including the potential integration of social groups in production and logistics. WP3 – Development of a standardized Biomass Energy Model

Outcomes of previous WPs integrated in ready-to- implement Biomass Energy Plan (including a businessmodel); Design of a clear integrated management of the supply chain; Uniting stakeholders, engaging key actors and setting out a strategy. WP4 – Biomass Energy Plans
