Understanding the provenance of data is essential –  Catalog information is essential  Source  Validity, verification, etc. Currently too many data services are being delivered through open source that are not traceable ExampleExample

Improve user access to data  We know that in many countries access to data is restricted  What can be done to change this?  Could WIS help streamline data licensing?  Would this make data more accessible?  Access via mobile internet, especially important for developing countries and mobile users (e.g. farmers, health workers)mobile internet  Consistency across delivery platforms, incl. SMS Improve access to information about the data Example

Gateway to providing interactive services  Two-way communication; and  Data exchange – uploading information from the community

The need to combine information and data from different sources is increasing  Health, weather, climate demographics  Agriculture, climate, economic, social Important to have key disciplinary partners in development

For example: Regional and sub-regional structure to climate services in Africa  Need for consistency at all levels …  Discovery…  Facilitate payment services… Facilitate payment services

A subset of metadata needs to be developed for users – the farmer, for example. She needs to be able to know about the reliability of the information she is buying… Metadata is a means of communicating to non specialists information about the data – especially its limitations

Common understanding of information and data needs across multiple services and platforms  Need to understand how people interact now to provide these services  Examples of services platforms; e.g., Shanghai Met Bureau, UKMO, …

Know where the data comes from Data licensing is likely to become a reality – WIS could play an important role in making this work fairly Nearly common interface for all data from all sources – should matter who is using the information it should be in the format that they want Consistency Knowing the reliability of information is critical
