Size & Population. Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres. It covers 8.6% of the Earth's total surface area (or 29.9% of its land area) It hosts 60% of the world's current human population; 4 billion people. During the 20th century Asia's population nearly quadrupled.

Countries/Borders China, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, India and Pakistan are just a few countries that form to make this enormous continent. Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkey are considered part of both Europe and Asia. Armenia and Cyprus are entirely in Western Asia, but are sociopolitically European countries. The division between Asia and Africa is usually considered to be the Suez CanalSuez Canal

Boundaries The division between Asia and Australasia (Oceania) is disputed, and placed somewhere between Java and New Guinea. Indonesia spans both areas, but is considered to be Asian. Papua New Guinea is occasionally considered Asian by virtue of neighbouring Indonesia, but this is rare, and it is generally accepted to be part of Australasia. Geographical – “Layers of Asia” (9 min)

Early History Asia is the birthplace of all the earliest known civilizations except that of Egypt The early inhabitants of Egypt and coastal North Africa were probably Asians, as were the ancestors of the American Indians and Eskimos. The nations of Europe were formed in large part by peoples retreating westward before ferocious Asian warriors such as the Huns, Turks, and Mongols

China’s One Child Policy In 1979 a one-child policy was introduced to reduce China’s burgeoning population. According to the policy a couple was allowed to have one child. If that child turned out be a girl, they were allowed to have a second child. After the second child, they were not allowed to have any more children. In some places couples were only allowed to have one child regardless of whether it is a boy or a girl. This policy is still in effect today.

Undocumented Children in China Additional children born to parents that have reached their one-child limit often have a rough ride. Some are denied a birth certificate and proper documentation. Without these children can not enter school or find work as adults. Undocumented children ("black permit" children) are born and raised in secret and never registered. There are around 6 million undocumented children in China. Most of them are believed to be girls. Orphans with malnutrition Are often the result of Neglect.

“Less births, better births, to develop China vigorously” “Carry out family planning” These are some typical one child policy posters from China. ( See handout and complete a PMI on the topic of China’s one child policy). Do you agree? Why is it necessary? Is it cruel?

One Child Policy. Using the handout as motivation, can you complete a PMI on China’s one child policy. “Have Fewer Children Live Better Lives” “Have Fewer, Better Children to Create Prosperity for the Next Generation.”
