Genomics Eddy Rubin December 3, 2008

DOE Joint Genome Mission Supported by the DOE Office of Science, JGI unites the expertise of five national laboratories—Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Pacific Northwest—along with the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology to advance genomics in support of the DOE missions related to clean energy generation and environmental characterization and cleanup. JGI is operated by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. The JGI Production Genomics Facility (PGF) is located in Walnut Creek, CA, equidistant between LBNL & LLNL. 2

The JGI Production Genomics Facility (PGF) The PGF’s workforce of ~240 is comprised of LBNL & LLNL employees (80%/20%). 3

JGI: A National User Facility World Class Science: –Advancing the scientific literature—over 48 papers in the journals Science and the Nature where JGI played a leadership role (first or senior authorship) –over the last three years, JGI has played a role and shared co-authorship in a total of 234 peer-reviewed publications Efficient and Productive Sequencing : –Generating DNA sequence data (in October 2008 alone) of over 20 billion nucleotides, or the equivalent of over six human genomes). 4

JGI as National User Facility II Broad/Diverse Impact through the Community Sequencing Program— over 1350 Users WW in

Genomics: A Workplace of Many Disciplines: Production, Computation, and the PGF: –Repetitive manual manipulation of sample plates to facilitate the Sanger sequencing process –Sample prep for next gen (454/Illumina) sequencers –Standard microbiological/molecular biology lab practice –Keyboard-intensive development of computational tools/data Building 84/74 (LBNL): –Standard molecular biology laboratory practices –Micromanipulation of mouse embryos for the creation of transgenic models 6
