The Skeletal System

Outcomes By the end of the lesson, you will be able to: Know what the skeletal system is. Understand the functions of the skeletal system. Be able to identify the major bones in the body.

Your skeleton Facts Without your skeleton, you would be a shapeless sack of flesh. There are 206 bones in your body.

TASK Label your skeleton using ONLY the following words: cranium, clavicle, scapula, humorous, radius, ulna, phalanges, sternum, ribs, pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, patella.

Functions of your Skeleton Your bones have 4 functions within your body. SHAPE AND SUPPORT The bones in our bodies form a framework to support out body. The different length and thickness of our bones determine our individual shape.

Functions of your Skeleton 2. PROTECTION Our bones surround the areas that are delicate and could get damaged. The vertebral bones surround our spinal cord, and our skull acts as an internal crash helmet to protect our brain. Our ribs and sternum act as a flexible but strong surround to protect out lungs, heart and kidneys.

Functions of your skeleton 3. MOVEMENT Your Muscles are firmly attached to your skeleton. Muscles work by contracting (getting shorter). When they contract, they pull on our bones. This makes them move.

Functions of your Skeleton 4. BLOOD PRODUCTION Bones make blood cells in the marrow cavity and spongy bone. These cells are then used to transport gasses around the body.

TASK Think back to the bones in the body. Try to remember these. Put your books away. Label Sam the Skeleton correctly.

Homework Learn the names of the bones in the skeleton ready for a short test next week.
