The Skeletal System 20/06/2013

Starter Discussion: What do you know about the skeletal system?

Learning Objectives: Consider different functions of the skeleton Be aware of the bones that make up the skeleton.

Label the Skeleton ScapulaSternumFibula PatellaRibsTarsals TibiaSkullHumerus RadiusPelvisMetatarsals UlnaFemur VertebraePhalanges Carpals MetacarpalsPhalanges

Functions of the skeleton Make a list of what the skeleton actually protects within the body. Use your labelled diagram of the skeleton to work out which specific bones protect which organs. Give as many sporting actions as you can where the skeleton protect the organs during an action. Be specific!

Functions of the skeleton Blood Production Help make blood because they produce red cells, white cells and platelets in the marrow Movement Allows movement, when the muscles contract they pull on the bones Protection Such as ribs and the skull Shape The skeleton gives the body its form. Support It supports the body in a vertical position.

Types of Bones ClassificationFunctionExample Long bones Short Bones Flat Bones Irregular Bones Allow large / gross movement Such as phalanges Have large surface area for muscle attachment Specific shapes for specific jobs Vertebrae – ??? Bones in the skull Tibia, Fibular, Ulna, Radius, Femur Allow fine movement To protect spinal cord

Homework Research the different types of connective tissue. What are they? What do they do? Tendons Cartilage Ligaments

Joints A joint is?…………… A joint is where two or more bones meet.

Create a Presentation/Fact Sheet Create a presentation/fact sheet on joints, explaining: 3 different categories of joints (immovable, slightly moveable, freely moveable) 6 different types of synovial joints (ball & socket, hinge, pivot, saddle, gliding, condyloid) An example of a synovial joint, including: Type of bone Type of synovial joint Specifically where the tendons attach to Specifically where the ligaments attach to Specifically what the cartilage does
