EDUCATION Sector Update – 29 September 2011 HUMANITARIAN ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING - LIBERIA SECTORAL UPDATE Children in a class room tent, the Solo Refugee Camp Grand Gedeh

PROGRESS education sector Highlights To date over 38,600 children in school ( 3,600 increased ) Partners expanding operational areas from 63 locations to 71 locations in 3 counties, esp. border communities NIMBA 20,723 CHILDREN (Liberian + Ivorian) IN ECD/PRIMARY Education activities continue in Buutuo axis (SC), Loguatuo axis (IRC), Bahn camp (SC), and Gborplay axis (PLAN) On going – Currently 2,772 children aged 2-5 in ECD centres with 68 caregivers On going – Currently 18,139 children aged 6-12 in Primary Schools with 106 teachers 48% Ivorian, 52% Liberian children (% of Ivorian children increased compared to last week)

PROGRESS education sector GRAND GEDEH 14,162 CHILDREN (Liberian + Ivorian) IN ECD/PRIMARY EDUCATION On going ECCD activities for 1,339 children aged 2-5 with 47 caregivers On going Primary education for 12,823 children aged 6-12 (63% Ivorian, 37% Liberian) with 139 Primary teachers MARYLAND 3,798 CHILDREN IN ECD/PRIMARY/SECONDARY/YOUTH CENTRE On going ECCD activities for 1,135 children aged 2-5 with 19 caregivers On going Primary education for 2,663 children aged 6-12 (67% Ivorian, 33% Liberian) More than 1,070 ECD/Primary children attending in Little Wlebo camp schools (camp school + additional tent school) RIVER GEE One school with 200 refugee children in 2-shift arrangement in Fishtown started, sector members visiting in River Gee on situation monitoring

CHALLENGES education sector NIMBA Schools are not child friendly - Insufficient teaching materials for teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and lack of WASH facilities limited road conditions disturbing the supply distribution GRAND GEDEH No spaces for recreatioanl activities – allocated area not been cleared Accessibility to Gborplay axis very limited – affecting EIE implementation Inadequate learning facilities – WASH, school furniture, teaching and learning materials MARYLAND Issue of teacher incentives not fully resolved, esp. In host communities Slow progress of the school furniture production – overcrowded classes RIVER GEE Currently, the road between Zwedru and Fishtown not fully accessible No school materials distributed yet in regards to the relocation exercise

WAY FORWARD education sector Support and facilitate the dialogue between MOE-Liberia and the delegation mission from MOE-Ivory Coast, delegation is staying In Liberia until 5 October Training continues 2 directions; (1) teachers/caregivers on child safeguarding/pedagogy, (2) PTA members on school management Continuous advocacy for resolution of teachers incentives Accelerate supply distribution for all students recently enrolled Rehabilitation of WASH facilities/community school buildings in affected areas through locally available resources in addition to the activation and support to PTA/community involvement Active sector coordination with partners on joint advocacy actions e.g. teacher incentive issues
