Population Characteristics

Human Development Index A set of living conditions that gives a general picture of what life is like in a given country.

Fertility Rate The average number of babies born in a woman’s lifetime in a given country. Country A = 1.58 children born/woman Country B = 5.39 children born/woman

Birth Rate The number of babies who are born each year for every 1000 people in a country. Country A = births/1,000 pop. Country B = births/1,000 pop.

Death Rate The number of people who die each year for every 1000 people in a country. Country A = 7.98 deaths/1,000 pop. Country B = deaths/1,000 pop.

Natural Increase Is when the population goes up because the birth rate is higher than the natural death rate.

Life Expectancy Is the number of years that a baby born in a particular year can be expected to live under current conditions. Country A = years Country B = years

Net Migration Is the difference between the number of people leaving (emigrating) a country and those coming in (immigrating). Country A = 5.65 migrants/1,000 population Country B = 3.31 migrants/1,000 population

Doubling Time The amount of time it will take a country to double in size. More developed countries have a doubling time that is hundreds of years. The average doubling time for developing countries is 37 years.

Literacy Rate Is a measure of the population over 15 who can read and write. Country A = 99% Country B = 28.1% (male = 43% female = 12.5%)

Per Capita Income The average amount of money earned by each person in a country for one year. Country A = $39,400 Country B = $900

Infant Mortality Rate Is the amount of infant deaths out of every 1,000 babies born in a year in a country. Country A = 4.92 deaths/1,000 live births Country B = deaths/1,000 live births

Population Pyramids Are a type of graph that give information about the number of people in each age group and the balance of males and females in a country’s population.

What inferences can we make about “Country A” and Country B”? Which country would you rather live in? Which country do you believe is more “developed”?
