1 Where Has the World’s Population Increased? Chapter 2: Population Key Issue #2

2 Natural Increase Crude birth rate (CBR) – total number of live births/1000 people Ex. 50 births/1000 people Crude death rate (CDR) – total number of deaths/1000 people Ex. 25 deaths/1000 people Natural Increase Rate (NIR): (CBR – CDR)/100 Ex. (50 – 25) = 25/1000 or 2.5/100 or 2.5% Excludes migration Doubling time – the time necessary for a population to double in size 3-4 billion in 14 years 4-5 billion in 13 years 5-6 billion in 12 years Base population is increasing (which population continues to increase rapidly even though NIR is dropping)

3 Other Statistics Total Fertility Rate (TFR) – average number of children a woman will have while possible Infant Mortality Rate – number of deaths of children under age 1/1000 births Life expectancy – expected years of life
