Georgia Demographic and health status Trends Overall health Status in Georgian fell following independence and only began to recover at the beginning of the 21 st Century. Although still high by international comparison, maternal mortality rates have improved from 55.1/ live births in 1995 to 14.4 in 2008 and for infant mortality from 41/1000 live births in 1990 to 26 in 2008 respectively. Cardiovascular diseases are leading cause of mortality, accounting for 55.2% followed by malignancies at 10.8%. Average life expectancy has decreased from 72.9 years (1990) to 70.3 in 1995, but rose again to 76.9 years in 2010 (men 73.6 and women 80.6 years) Life expectancy is higher than the WHO Europeans Region average of 75.0 years.
