Definition of Prevention Focuses on preventing the onset of substance use, abuse, and addiction Addresses substance-related problems up to, but not including, assessment and treatment for abuse and dependence Is a proactive, multifaceted, multi-community sector process Is a planned sequence of activities applying evidence-based principles and practices ODADAS, 2005

ADVOCATE

Advocacy & Engaging Stakeholders Advocacy: the act of pleading for, supporting or recommending. EDUCATE – Have I ever advocated? Everyone is an advocate for something. Why advocate? – Good for our community – Well being for future generations – The more you advocate, the more you are recognized. – And who knows, you may have gained your royal position for a time like this. (Esther 4:14)

Lobbying vs. Advocacy Lobbying: activities that ask legislators to take a specific position on a specific piece of legislation, or urge others to do the same (IRS definition for nonprofits). Advocacy: any activity that a person or organization undertakes to influence policy - includes educating, providing information, arguing a cause. (Most work happens before a bill is introduced)

Grassroots vs. grass-tops advocacy – Grassroots: , letter, every-day citizen – Grass-tops: Relationship with the legislator or opinion leader in the community – Am I resigned to one class? Build Partnerships – Policy change happens with like-minded causes – Prevention Professionals and Family Engagement Groups Advocacy & Engaging Stakeholders

Advocacy Do’s – Support your facts and document your resources – Listen to other opinions – Keep letters and visits short and to the point – Know the arguments of opposing viewpoints and acknowledge the opposing viewpoint Don’ts – Make your issue complicated – Be belligerent – Be disappointed if you don’t accomplish your purpose on the first visit
