Raise Your Childs Attendance, Raise their Chances! What does “Good attendance” mean?

Some questions… Do you know our school target for attendance? Do you know what your child's attendance is? Do you think this is good?

This is Simon. He is in Year 5 and his attendance is 90% “Wow, 90%!” I hear you say. Sounds pretty good doesn’t it. Or does it?

90% attendance = ½ day missed …every week! MonTueWedThurFri ? Absent half a day every week

I wonder… Would your boss like you to be off work this much? That’s practically part time!

Lets look at this a little closer… 90% attendance over 1 school year = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED! 38 school weeks Sept July ? Absent for 4 weeks

So, 90% attendance over 5 years of primary school… = ½ a school year missed! Sept July Y7 Y8 Y9 ½ a year absent from school Y10 Y11

What impact might this have on Simon’s life? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = a GCSE/level grade DROP in achievement. Therefore, the greater the attendance the greater the achievement.

So, 90% is not as good as it first seemed. What can I do as a parent to increase my child's attendance?

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: 1.Communicate regularly with us about your child's absence. (Ask for half days if it’s easier) and check this matches with your own record. 2.Talk regularly with your child about school and how they feel about it. They are more likely to want to attend if they feel supported and can share any anxieties.

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: 3.Phone us as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent, and when you expect them to return. Putting the school number in your phone can save you time. Make sure you know the school routine for alerting us of your child’s absence. 4.Only grant days at home for genuine illness. (You will know!) 5.Avoid taking holidays or any unnecessary time off during school time.

Ways for parents to encourage attendance: 6.Know routines of the school day to avoid issues, e.g. have they got their PE kit? 7.If you have concerns ring us – we will check attendance and be discreet. 8.PRAISE AND REWARD GOOD ATTENDANCE: even small successes, e.g. going in promptly and in time for the start of the day activity!

Other ways to encourage good attendance: 1.If there is a problem with your child’s attendance, talk calmly to your child and listen to the explanation. There is always an explanation. It may not impress you, but it counted enough with your child to make them not want to attend. Pursuing the reason for non attendance is important. 2.Talk to us to resolve issues. We maybe able to help and support you and your child. You are not alone.

Other ways to encourage good attendance: 3.Be particularly watchful and supportive in the run up to tests and be aware of homework deadlines. 4.Help them catch up with missed work. A missed day doesn’t have to mean missed work. 5.Remember to PRAISE good attendance.

Attend, Enjoy and Achieve!  If a school can improve attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment.  Please help us and your child by ensuring their attendance remains above 96%, allowing them to enjoy school and achieve their potential.
