3 Transition to Year 1 We aim to make the transition to Year 1 from Reception as smooth as possible. “Busy time” is replaced by “Let’s Learn” – a structured playing activity As the year progresses Let’s Learn is gradually replaced by structured lessons.

4 Responsibility During Year 1 we try to encourage the children to be more responsible by setting a good example to the younger Reception children. They are encouraged to be independent by: Looking after their own belongings Getting changed quickly without help Change reading books on their own, when completed Use clues such as visual timetables to help them become independent learners Put their belongings away quickly and settle into morning activities

5 Phonics In year 1 the majority of children will be learning phase 5 Letters and Sounds. Some children will be catching up on phases 2 to 4 before they start phase 5. 9 Homework Daily reading to an adult Weekly spellings (alternate between HFW and phonics words) Maths and English/Project (alternate weeks) Practise handwriting and digit formation on a regular basis

10 Holidays Our school year is incredibly busy and your child will miss a huge amount if taken out of school during term time. One week of holiday every year of primary school adds up to over half of a term of missed learning! We therefore ask that you avoid taking your child out of school for holidays during term time. We are unable to provide work for holiday absence, we also do not set homework over the school holidays. However if you wish, your child could write a diary of their time away which they can share at school, but we will be unable to mark it. Please be aware that government rules have changed regarding holidays in term time and you may be liable for a fine.
