Risk Management Your guide to keeping you and your societies safe By Hannah Parratt

Introduction The aims of this session are: To be aware of the risk procedure. Understand why risk assessments are important and filling them out. How insurance fits in with risk assessments. What your role is in delivering the activity.

Why are risk assessments done? It is a legal requirement. It keeps both you and your members safe. Your society is not insured without one. Duty of care

The risk assessment form (Your new best friend)

Duty of care We all hold a duty of care (students’ union, society etc.) for every activity that is ran. This care of duty is heightened depending on the type of activity that is going on. Understanding your health and safety responsibilities towards: You Society members Committee Durham Students’ Union Durham University Public Understand risks to reputation of Durham Students’ Union and University

Insurance DSU members Society members are insured Temporary members Trips abroad Coaches and instructors

How is the form done

During the activity Its not just about completing the form. when the activity is actually happening the actions on the risk assessment have been completed. Delegate the actions out and make sure they are completed.

Procedure The students’ union should always be your first point of call should their be an issue. If the building is open their will be either a member of staff or porter available. Hannah Parratt- Depending on your trip/event you may be allocated an emergency number for the union. You should have an emergency procedure Always call someone who can immediately help with the situation before anyone else ie emergency services Always notify the Students’’ Union (whether this be asap to a porter, asap the next day or using emergency contact) The Students union will ask you to fill in an incident report form. Ensure members are aware that sharing emergencies/incidents on social media can create panic
