Let’s enjoy stories Session 1 Takeaway Notes

Let’s enjoy stories - Session 1 les quatre saisons au printemps – in spring en été – in summer en automne – in autumn en hiver – in winter

Les sports il/elle joue au foot – he/she is playing football il/elle joue au tennis – he/she is playing tennis il/elle joue au rugby – he/she is playing rugby il/elle joue au golf – he/she is playing golf il/elle joue au pingpong – he/she is playing table tennis il/elle joue au hockey – he/she is playing hockey il/elle joue à la Wii – he/she is playing on the Wii

Phonics focus au – like the vowel sound in ‘all’ printemps – vin, lapin, cinq – nasal sound printemps – like ‘en’ in ‘en suite’ en – as in ‘en suite’ été – é is short, as in café, egg, elephant, not as in ‘say’ au – like the vowel sound in ‘all’ omne – silent ‘m’, sounds like ‘onne’ hiver – silent ‘h’. The ‘i’ sounds like ‘ee’, and the ‘er’ sounds like ‘air’

Grammar focus Note that it is ‘au printemps’ but ‘en’ is used with the other seasons. Highlight the difference in meaning between ‘je’ (I) and ‘il/elle’ (he/she). Speech bubbles are useful to show the difference between someone saying what they are doing, compared to saying what someone else is doing. Emphasise that ‘il joue’ can mean ‘he plays’ OR ‘he is playing’ – this is important and will have to be revisited often.

Les jeux 1.Number the seasons 2.Charades 3.Playdough game

Teaching Tips Ask the class to repeat new language after you (Regardez, écoutez et répétez!). Sometimes make them hold it in their heads for five seconds before saying it out loud. Practise the seasons with flashcards, Ppt slides or items such as sunglasses, ski goggles, warm scarf and cut out autumn leaf. Similarly find items to represent the sports e.g. a tennis ball, mini rugby ball etc. Say the new words in different voices e.g, quietly, loud, squeaky, fast, slow for a couple of minutes before play/lunch time/end of day Put the items in a bag and get ready to pull one out. See if they can guess what it is

Do one thing! How you can practise the new language Practise the new language and sounds using the PowerPoint handout Review the grammar points Play the games (in the car/shower/with friends and family) practising different commands

What you can do with your class Ask the children to repeat after you (Regardez, écoutez, répétez!) Ask children to say a sport when answering the register Practise during the week when you have a spare couple of minutes Say the weather, temperature and season at the beginning of each day. Ask one of the children to read the temperature in French from a thermometer.

Classroom Routine Greet the class in French ‘Bonjour’ ‘Au revoir’ Ask them to respond to the register in French ‘Bonjour Madame…/Monsieur… Use numbers, weather, names of sports and the seasons in French as often as you can.
