Let’s enjoy places Session 2

Let’s Enjoy Places – Session 2 au nord-est – in the north-east au nord-ouest – in the north-west au sud-est – in the south-east au sud-ouest – in the south-west il y a – there is/there are une ville – a town/city un village – a village grand – big petit – small Questions comment dit-on… ? – how do you say…? Classroom language travaillez à deux – work in pairs prenez un crayon – take a pencil dessinez - draw décrivez - describe Extra consultez un dictionnaire – look in a dictionary

Phonics Focus est - difference in pronunciation of the word meaning ‘east’ and the part of the verb être compare with pronunciation of et petit/petite; grand/grande – the silent t/d at the end of the word is sounded when an e is added to make the feminine form

Grammar Focus Position and agreement of adjectives: un petit village une petite ville While most adjectives come after the noun they describe, there are some common adjectives which precede the noun, for example grand and petit. Adjectives ‘agree’ with the noun they describe. If the noun is masculine (un village), the adjective is in the masculine form (petit). If the noun is feminine (une ville), the adjective is in the feminine form (petite). In this case, an e is added to petit and the last t is pronounced.

Teaching Tips You could use the maps in various ways. Bear in mind that the purpose of the activity (drawing, labelling etc.) is for the learners to communicate in pairs, and to demonstrate their understanding by recording information in writing. They should take turns in giving and receiving information, and should be encouraged to speak only in French. You may wish to provide reference materials. When working with learners of any age, you need to think about how you will respond to requests for extra vocabulary and ‘how do you say..?’ questions. Think about your objectives and whether giving additional vocabulary will enhance or distract from the learning experience. How will you encourage creativity? How will you ensure focus? How will you increase their range of learning strategies?

Do One Thing! Try an activity with your class where children work in pairs, giving information to each other in French and drawing or labelling a picture accordingly Use at least three of the classroom instructions from Sessions 1 & 2 consistently in French every time you ask the children to do something (e.g. dessinez, décrivez, montrez, indiquez, regardez, travaillez à deux) Research and learn the masculine and feminine forms of 5 common adjectives that you think will be useful in the classroom
