3 Phonics focus [e] ai - j’ai [wa] oi – soif, froid [ɛ̃] aim - faim [o] au -chaud Note silent letters at the end and the exception – ‘f’ in soif which is pronounced

4 Grammar focus The verb avoir (to have) is used to make other expressions to say how you feel as well as j‘ai mal. For example, j’ai chaud, j’ai froid, j’ai faim, j’ai soif - I’m hot, I’m cold, I’m hungry, I’m thirsty. It is also used to say how old you are – j’ai…ans You can ask somebody else – Are you…? Using the second person singular of avoir tu as..? e.g. Tu as mal au bras? Note that this is the easiest way to form a question in French, by simply raising the tone of your voice at the end of the sentence. Extra To talk about somebody else, use the third person – il a / elle a Il a mal au bras /elle a mal a al jambe

5 Teaching Tips Introduce the new expressions with avoir with actions Introduce very simple dialogues between doctor and patient – model : Bonjour docteur / Bonjour + name J’ai mal ……. / Ah non (put bandage on affected part) Merci, au revoir docteur / Au revoir + name Play song Docteur, j’ai mal and ask class to identify the different parts of the body on a body outline Play the dialogues and ask class to identify the different parts of the body on a body outline Ask them to work out what the suggested remedies are

How you can practise the new language Practise the new language and sounds Review the grammar points Listen to and read the dialogues aloud to practice pronunciation and intonation What you can do with your class Practise songs/play a game during the week Introduce the new expressions with avoir and /or the remedies Start getting the class to join in with simple dialogues Classroom routine Greet the class in French ‘Bonjour’ ‘Au revoir’ Ask them to respond to the register in French ‘Bonjour Madame…/Monsieur… or with a part of the body or with how they feel using the new expressions
