Masters Degrees Non Co-opCo-op Master of Applied Science (MASc): Thesis-based * 5 courses (minimum) * Research seminar * 6 academic terms * 5 courses (minimum) * Research seminar * 8 terms (6 academic terms + 2 work terms) Master of Management Sciences (MMSc): Coursework-based * 8 courses (minimum) * 3 academic terms * 8 courses (minimum) * 5 terms (3 academic terms + 2 work terms) Required Core Courses: MSCI 603, 605, 607 (for MASc) MSCI 603, 605, 607, 609 (for MMSc) Elective Courses: Maximum of two courses can be taken outside of the department, including approved Ontario Visiting Graduate Student (OVGS). 6

2. Switching from MMSc to MASc  Students should complete the 1 st or 2 nd term.  During this period, students should take time to get to know the potential supervisor(s). Some issues to consider in selecting a supervisor include topic, expertise, supervision style, personality and funding.  Students should contact the potential supervisor(s).  If mutually agreed, the Graduate Officer makes the final assessment.  7

2. Ph.D. degree  Degree requirements Six required courses: 3 core courses (MSCI 603, 605, 607) and 3 elective courses. MSci graduates get exemptions of the core courses. Pass the comprehensive exam, no later than the end of the 4 th term of enrolment. Pass the oral exam and defend a thesis of independent and original research, to be completed by the end of term 12.  See the website for more information on courses. 8

3. Graduate courses  Required core courses MSCI 603: Principles of Operations Research MSCI 605: Organization Theory and Behaviour MSCI 607: Applied Economics for Management MSCI 609: Quantitative Data Analysis (only for MMSc)  Elective courses from other departments must be approved by the Associate Chair prior to enrolment. The courses should be related to topics in MSci. MSci does not offer similar courses. 9

3. Course exemptions  Students (masters and Ph.D.) may apply for exemptions from any of the required core courses. The current instructor makes the final decision. You have achieved over 80% of the course(s) which were taken within last 5 years; The material is covered no more than two courses. You should submit the exemption form by Friday, October 9,  For masters students, each exempted course must be replaced (but not for Ph.D. students). 10

3. Failure in courses  Students must maintain an overall average of at least 73% at the end of each term, with no more than two failed courses overall. A grade below 65% is considered a fail. A failed course will count in your overall GPA, but will not count towards the required number of courses. If students fail the same core course twice, they are required to withdraw from the program. A failed elective course must be replaced. 11

3. Drop/Add courses  Students can drop & add courses via Quest until the 6 th week of the term - October 23 rd,  After October 23rd, students should complete and submit a drop/add form to Lisa Hendel. The form must be approved by the course instructor and your supervisor (or Associate Chair). Doctor’s note should be provided for medical reasons. For other reasons, the student should have experienced exceptional circumstances to get approved. It is very rare to get approved for other reasons. 12

3. Activity Reports  Only MASc and Ph.D. students should submit the activity reports each term, starting the second term. It enables the department to gauge students’ progress and to assist in the awarding of scholarships. Students are provided feedbacks if required.  Process It is due by the end of the second week of the term. It indicates the academic progress (courses and research). Your supervisor must sign the activity report before you submit it. 13

4. Policies and Grievances  It is your responsibility to be familiar with the University Graduate Calendar, Faculty guidelines, and Department guidelines. If you are a transitional or probationary student, be sure to review that section in the Graduate Calendar.  All students should read: UW Policy 71 (Academic Discipline) UW Policy 70 (Student Grievances) 14

4. Academic Integrity  All students are required to take the online Academic Integrity course. One important topic is how to avoid plagiarism. See the handout and UW Policy 71 (Academic Discipline). 5. Co-op program  Application requirements Application deadline: December 2, 2015 It is available to masters students only. Minimum of 80% in the Fall 2015 grade or previous degree. A good command of English  Program requirements Sequence 1: F15A – W16A – S16WT – F16WT – W17A Sequence 2: F15A – W16A – S16WT – F16A – W17WT – S17A Complete work term reports in each term, approved by the Graduate Officer. 16

6. Teaching Assistantships (TAs)  Each term, the department hires TAs for various courses (depending on the number of enrolment). The application form and information on TA application procedure is available online each term. studies/teaching-assistantships-management-sciences Students must successfully complete the ExpecTAtions workshop to be eligible for TA (offered on September and April each year). The selection decision of TAs is solely on the discretion of the course instructor. 17

6. Teaching Assistantships (TAs)  TAs’ duties TAs are paid for providing support to the teaching of MSCI courses (approximately $4,007 per term). One full TA position is equivalent to 10 hours/week of work over 13 weeks of the term. Full-time graduate students may not accept more than 10 hours of employment per week. TAs should be present at UW from the start date of the term to the date of completing the marking the final exam. If not, the TA contract may be cancelled. 18

7. Scholarships  Faculty of Engineering/UW Merit Scholarships are awarded by the Department. Available to domestic and international students. Students must maintain a minimum 80% overall average. There should be no incomplete grades. Scholarships are applied against the students tuition.  Scholarships are not eligible to those students who have a probationary or transitional condition, who are part-time or inactive, are in the Coop program who are transferred from other departments. 19

7. Department Awards  Fraser Research Award (approximately $1,000) Open to Master’s and Ph.D. students for research paper. Students must be registered as an MSCI students in one of the previous three terms.  Donald J. Clough Memorial Award (approx. $300) Awarded to (domestic and international) Masters students. Students must be enrolled in the first year.  El Gabbani Award (approx. $750) Awarded to (international) Masters students only. 20

7. MSCI Graduate Research Scholarship  It is targeted to MMSc students who are interested in transferring to the MASc program. The selection process is based on academic performance during the Fall 2015 and/or Winter 2016 terms. Successful applicants are expected to have achieved an average above 80%. $4,000 is awarded evenly over 3 terms, conditional on students’ finding a thesis supervisor.  MSCI TA Awards One award per term is given to an excellent TA. 21

7. International Student Award  Requirements International students (with valid study permit) who maintain full time student status. Students should meet the academic progress requirements of the program. Students are not receiving external awards or sponsorships.  Amount MASc students: $1,880 per term (maximum of 6 terms). Doctoral students: $3,760 per term (maximum of 9 terms). 22

7. Graduate Studies Bursary and Award  It is open to all students who are OSAP eligible; that is, Canadian and permanent residents (CPR).  Other small amount of funding are available for international students. Check Millennium Graduate Bursary Application on Graduate Studies Office website. 23

7. Tri Council and OGS Scholarships  They are major federal and provincial scholarships. NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, OGS  To learn about eligibility criteria and application process, attend the scholarship information session.  September 14 th, 4:00 to 6:00pm or  September 17 th, 5:00 to 7:00pm (Humanities Theatre). See Department website for more details. These sessions are geared towards MASc and Doctoral students who have a minimum 80% average. 24

8. Graduate students list  The department UW administrative offices will use your account. Most correspondence to students from the Department and University will be through . (Must complete on-line mandatory safety training prior to receiving your key permit.)
