The only limitation to virtual learning is your imagination. Presentation 10a)

How can I use distance learning technology ? The Diplomas

Objective  To demonstrate how Virtual Technology can provide solutions to the delivery of the new Diploma’s being Introduced between now and 2013.

The Diplomas  2008 – First five have started  To-date 12,000 students (60%) out of possible 20,000 take up the options.  2013 – Total of 17 diplomas  Take-up estimates range from 40% to 80%  Still many unresolved concerns

Concerns  How Many Pupils?  Where will they learn?  Transport?  Timetabling?  Record Keeping? (Attendance, levels of attainment etc.)  Access to their work?  Accommodation?  Teacher training?  Business partners?  Making available any Diplomas to any pupil?

Characteristics  tends to have high capital cost  suited to urban areas with good transport links  requires formal agreement over ownership/management  gives partnership physical reality - increases buy-in? Variant 1: Single Vocational Hub

Characteristics  Suited to more dispersed population, or larger number of partners, with good transport links  Requires formal agreement over ownership/management  Gives partnership a physical reality - increases buy-in? Variant 2: Dispersed Vocational Centres, Linked to Schools

Characteristics  Low capital cost  Suited to urban areas or dispersed populations with good transport links  Allows for flexible partnership arrangements, but less buy-in? Movement of teachers and learners Variant 3: Informal Collaboration

Characteristics  Extensive use of ICT, videoconferencing, distance and e-learning  Medium to high capital cost  Suited to rural/dispersed populations with poor transport links  Allows for more flexible partnership arrangements E-learning (ILS) No movement of teachers or learners Variant 4: School and College Virtual Groups

Solutions Any Solution Needs To Be:  Cost effective.  Sustainable  As or more effective than any present solution being contemplated.  Compatible with existing and planned technology.  Easily implemented.  Secure and proven.  Easily accessed and used by all users.  Flexible and future proof, able to accommodate delivery of many more diplomas, catering for pupil’s needs.  Offer onsite and remote support for both technical and training.

The Live internet classroom and conferencing system uses  Normal computers to allow participants to meet via the internet in a secure and safe site.  Enables participants to engage in online meetings or classes where they are able to:  hear each other  see one another  collaborate on any document  share any software application  Facilitates online collaboration and teaching via bandwidths as low as 28kbps.  Allows all classes and meetings to be recorded and edited What is a Live Internet Classroom?

1 VIRTUAL CAMPUS: 2 VIRTUAL CLASSROOM: 3 VIRTUAL MEETING ROOM: 4 VIRTUAL LECTURE ROOM: 5 WEB CONFERENCING 6 REMOTE TECHNICAL SUPPORT

 Share access to software running from any participant’s PC - excellent for collaborative work or training  Divide students/delegates into groups and send them to satellite groups for collaborative tasks.  Provide LearnLinc with address of participants and it will send out invitations. Students can then join class/meeting via hyperlink in Some other fundamental features:

The ability to view web pages together And ask your students questions

Student clicks here to raise their hand Instructor sees a yellow hand displayed opposite the student’s name Instructor can store content for the class in the Agenda. This is activated by a simple double click. The instructor can ask for feedback from the students. It is displayed in the form of a pie chart and each student’s choice is displayed opposite their name in the ‘People’ section Content can include PowerPoint slides, web sites, video clips, multiple choice questions and a host of other materials Teachers View

Does it work? Besides the Nisai Virtual Academy this model is currently operational in: Cornwall Hampshire Oxfordshire Lincolnshire Dorset Wiltshire Cambridgeshire Derbyshire East Riding of Yorkshire Somerset Norfolk East Sussex Hull Portsmouth Each week approximately 2,000 pupils are taught. If Nisai Benelux is taken into account then 5,000 pupils a week are taught each week across Europe.

Recorded Lessons

 Recorded classes can be edited, and stored for playback anytime.  Recordings are available 24/7 from any location  Allows pupils the opportunity to view the course in their own time  When they were unable to make the lesson for a variety of reasons  To re-enforce the “bits” they did not understand  To help with homework assignments  To revise  Used as ‘Booster’ programs to raise levels  Can also be used for;  Pupil reviews  Teacher assessments  Teacher training
