What is an LMS? A Learning Management System (or LMS) is a software package that enables the management and delivery of learning content and resources to students. Most LMS systems are web-based to facilitate “anytime, anywhere” access to learning content and administration. Retreived from: trainingforce.com

Typical Features of LMSs: 1.Creation of classes 2.Organization of resources 3.Curriculum content 4.Calendars 5.Messaging 6.Assignments 7.Interaction: student: student; students: teacher 8.Tools for Collaborating on work

Typical Features cont’d: 9. Reporting/ analytics 10. Delivery of course content over web-based interfaces, most often allowing remote participation by the instructor or pupil. 11. Interaction between students, such as instant messaging, email, and discussion forums. 12. Methods of assessment and testing (like creating pop quizzes).

The Mission Statement matters, not the tool itself. What is your mission?

My mission statement: Guide students to independent learning.

My Mission in using an LMS for Tech Pd for Teachers: 1.Share resources and 2. Provide a platform for practitioner collaboration

How? 1.Put resources for external or classroom use all in one place. 1.Give learners option to access lesson and resources at another time for review, missed class, flipped learning, blended learning, distant learning. 1.Make learning more engaging with media, different types of files. 1.Encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback and input. 1.Track and monitor student work more efficiently.

Popular LMSs 1. Schoology 2. Google Classroom 3. Canvas - not free 4. Moodle - better for e-courses - very involved 5. Blackboard - better for e-course 6. There are many, many more. Some are free, other are freemium, and other are paid license fees.
