Site License Advisory Team April 29, 2011 meeting

Agenda McAfee VirusScan and Microsoft Forefront Microsoft ECAL LANDesk/Altiris and asset/inventory management Secunia

McAfee A new issue with a false positive appeared on 4/28 (yesterday) –OCIO did not receive any reports of issues this time This makes the third major false-positive in one year Frustrations are being expressed on the Mac side and the Windows side McAfee expires in September 2012.

McAfee – Other Options Students: Microsoft Security Essentials –Currently available for free for all home use –Not available for enterprise (OSU) machines –Linked from OSU SLS at this time Preparing to make this the only student Windows option Fac/Staff: Microsoft Forefront –Endpoint solution available to all Fac/Staff in August, and available to any ECAL dept. now

Replacement Costs for McAfee In 2009, we requested replacement costs from departments. –The cost, built from our technical advisory team, assumed: 21,000 faculty/staff machines are currently licensed, each machine would likely take 20 minutes to migrate, at a rate of $50/hour –Total cost estimated at $350,000 Current use: 12,899 at MedCenter, 6,000 other users. Total cost may be closer to $316,000, if every machine must be touched. –McAfee costs nearly $400,000 for three years of licensing.

Issues with McAfee Replacement Mac/Linux Users –Possible solutions include: Retaining a McAfee Mac solution Open Source Mac solution (ClamAV) Purchasing from a different vendor (Symentac, Trend, etc.) Help Desk support –Replacement of Repository? Continued support? Student McAfee users? Can we get them to switch? Departments that don’t want to switch –What support can we offer? Negotiation support, repository support, other support? Is Forefront a best-of-breed choice? What about ClamAV/Symentac/Trend?

ECAL Departments wishing to upgrade can begin using the products at this time, per the evaluation clause. –Forefront actually has a 120-day eval period FY12 may be the last option for ECAL uplift for two years (until FY14) –Microsoft is ending the Campus Agreement (CA) and moving to the “Enrollment for Education Solutions” (EES) agreement Cost difference (per FTE): –CoreCAL: $38.45 –ECAL: $44.16

ECAL ECAL includes: –Exchange Server Enterprise CAL –Lync Server Standard/Enterprise CALS –SharePoint Enterprise CAL –System Center Operations Manager Client (SCCM component) –System Center Service Manager Client (SCCM Component) –System Center Data Protection Manager Client (SCCM Component) –Forefront Protection Suite –Forefront Unified Access Gateway –Windows Rights Management Services

Specific ECAL Highlights Forefront Endpoint protection: –Managed AV that can replace McAfee System Center Service Manager: –Helpdesk software, ITIL compliant System Center Operations Manager –Manages desktops and simplifies reporting SharePoint: –Opens global search functionality, insights, and composites Lync Server: –Audio/Video for online meetings and conferences, provides IM, allows white-boarding Exchange Server: –Unified Messaging, archiving, communication security features

LANDesk/Altiris Recommendation from OCIO Security to obtain one University price: Currently reviewing LANDesk –Departments will purchase on their own –$4.82/FTE for Management Suite –$1.64/FTE for Security Suite –Support in “incident packs” Wins since last time –Students removed from FTE counts Cost difference for an example department: –3 years: »Altiris: $177, »LANDesk FTE subscription w/ no students: $30,888 »LANDesk FTE subscription w/GRA: $37, »LANDesk FTE subscription w/all students: $179,598.87

Secunia Offered $100,000 to cover the entire campus (pricing takes into account currents spend) OCIO Security and MedCenter covered the cost Recommendation from OCIO Security to provide this PO in process
