Therefore by selecting the appropriate standard and sub category for the machine being assessed ONLY those potential hazards addressed in the standard are presented for consideration in the hazard identification portion of the software. This saves considerable time by not having to look through long lists of potential hazards that don’t apply to your machine. A risk assessment is conducted to determine the level of risk before any safeguarding, and with the current safeguarding implemented. A risk assessment is conducted again once the appropriate safeguarding is installed. The design, construction, performance and implementation of the safeguarding are done in accordance with ANSI B11.19.

This can be used as a management tool to determine the order that machines should be modified. A higher number means that machine or task is more hazardous than one with a lower number.
