Additional Required Courses Personal Finance/PE Fine Art 3rd year of Foreign Language Elective Focus Course If you have not fulfilled your fine art credit you may want to get that out of the way this year. It is required for graduation if you are on the University or Dual Path. Another class to consider is a 3rd year of a foreign language. We suggest you stay with the same language b/c colleges like to see that you developed a real understanding of the language rather than jumping to another language. Or you can sign up for another course you may be interested in. Course Levels Standard Honors AP How do I decide? Teacher Recommendations Standardized Test Results (PLAN/PSAT/ACT/SAT) Previous Grades Goals and Motivation One of the most popular questions we get in the counseling office is how do I know if I should take an honors or AP class. There isn’t just one factor to consider. We suggest you consider your teacher recommendations. If you disagree with a recommendation, speak with your teacher about it to make sure you understand why they made that recommendation. We also suggest that you pull out your standardized test results such as the PLAN, PSAT, ACT and SAT. Look at your percentages on your test results. If you fall within the 70-75% range you should be in honors classes. If you fell just below that range, but you’re very motivated, then discuss it with your parents and teachers and you may want to enroll in an honors class. Look and see how successful you were in your previous classes, it’s a good idea to consider your past grades. Finally, consider what your goals are and just how motivated you are. The honors and AP classes are very challenging and you should carefully consider whether or not one of these classes is for you. We encourage all students to take the most challenging courses in which they will be successful. Although the Honors and AP level courses are difficult there are advantages to taking them. DIPLOMAS Williamson County Honors Diploma – (Level 3) Students who qualify for an honors diploma, will receive only the highest level achieved. Williamson County Honors Diploma – (Level 3) Awarded to students who have completed the core curriculum and minimum of 14 credits at the honors or Advanced Placement level, 4 years of science, and a 3.5 or higher.  Credits earned from middle school will be counted as honors classes. Brentwood High School Honors Diploma – (Level 4) Awarded to students who have core requirements as well as the following course requirements:  4 years science and 3 years of a foreign language sequence.  In addition, the student must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, a minimum of five advanced placement courses must be taken, and all honor courses must be taken when offered.

DIPLOMAS Tennessee Diploma with Honors - (Level 1) Students who qualify for an honors diploma, will receive only the highest level achieved. Tennessee Diploma with Honors - (Level 1) Students who score at or above all of the subject area readiness benchmarks on the ACT or equivalent score on the SAT will graduate with honors. Readiness Benchmark scores are: English 18, Mathematics 22, Reading 21, Science 24 Tennessee Diploma with Distinction – (Level 2) Students will be recognized as graduating with “distinction” by attaining a B average and completing at least one of the following: • earn a nationally recognized industry certification • participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools • participate in one of the state’s All State musical organizations • be selected as a National Merit Finalist of Semi-Finalist • attain a score of 31 or higher composite score on the ACT • attain a score of 3 or higher on at least two advanced placement exams • earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted postsecondary credit
