Theatrical and Cultural Elements in Film Title: Bend it like Beckham Characters: What are the effects of the elements

1- Watch the first three minutes Summarize the conflicts. What is learned about the characters? Predict the rest of the film. Internal conflict vs. external

1- Quick write Describe a time when your parents or other family members had expectations for you that were different from your own.

1 - Watch and Take Notes (Think – Pair – Share) http://megashare Literary Elements Theatrical Elements Internal Conflicts Costumes/Makeup External Conflicts Props/Sets Cultural Components Acting Choices References to marriage and wedding customs in this segment: How do the theatrical elements underscore or portray the cultural conflict?

2 – List the First Words that Come to Mind: Arranged Marriages… Cultural Conflict: a struggle that occurs when people with different cultural expectations or attitudes interact.

2 - Scene 4 (8 min to 10:30) Do a close reading to highlight key cultural elements that create potential conflict between Jess and her family. How are Jess and Jules similar or different in the conflicts they face? What is a “proper woman” to Jess’s family? How are the scenes with the soccer team filmed? How is the music used? Why does Jess talk to Beckham?

2-Discuss Why do parents have expectations for their children? Where do these expectations come from? Why do parental expectations not always match children’s expectations?

2 - Quick Write: Would you accept an arranged marriage? Why or why not? Before the article, what do you think might be the benefits and drawbacks of an arranged marriage? As the article is read, list the pros and cons.

2 - Discussion What are the customs and rituals we have in in this country for dating and marriage. For example, does a man still have to ask permission of the father to marry his daughter? Can only the man ask the woman to marry him? Who pays for the wedding? (Put this in Your Own Culture) Fill in the “Indian Culture” as we read “Matrimony with a Proper Stranger.” Both Your Own Culture Indian Culture

2 - Reflection and Man’s Search for Meaning Themes What pressures do you think Jess in Bend in like Beckham may feel about marriage from her family and culture? How do you expect that she will feel? What choices can she make, how free is she, and what are her attitudes likely to predict?

3 – Use graphic as film plays/Discuss 30-52 Literary Elements Theatrical Elements Internal Conflicts Costumes/Makeup External Conflicts Props/Sets Cultural Components Acting Choices Words or phrases describing relationship of mothers and daughters: How do the theatrical elements underscore or portray the cultural conflicts?

3 – Close Reading (42-46) Look for contrasts between his expectations for Jess and her parents’ expectations. Discussion: What do we learn about Jess’s father’s experiences? How does Jess affect her sister’s engagements? Does the situation seem fair to you? Is it fair within their culture? Do parents always know what’s right for you? Does Jules’s anger toward Jess seem justified?

3 – Respond to Conflicting Expectations Analyze cultural conflict: Identify a conflict from this segment of the film, and explain whether it is an internal or external conflict. Address both sides of the conflict, and describe how the resolution, if any, is reached.

4 – Reflect on Types of Conflicts Think about what you know about conflicts between family members. Describe the types of conflicts that occur between the family members shown below. Relationship Types of Conflicts Mothers and Daughters Fathers and Daughters Mothers and Sons/ Fathers and Sons What are some of the reasons for the conflicts listed above?

4 – Read the Poem “Father and Son” by Tomasz Jastrun Describe the conflict between the father and son. What is the cause of the conflict? How is the conflict resolved? Look back at the words and phrases you recorded early and share them with a partner or group. Copy the words down into a “found poem” with the title “Mother and Daughter.” The poem can include film experiences or your own. Remember that a found poem is made up of words and phrases from other sources – other poems, texts such as newspaper, books, signs, and so on. Share Poems!

4 - “Father and Son” Here is not good enough And he looks at me with reproach But what can I do I’m not about to offer excuses So I let my silence speak Finally he hugs me As if he suddenly realizes We have to get along to come to an agreement There is no one else To deal with And after a while We both get to work He collects Old bus tickets I fuss with words Out of which I can whittle My crutches and can

5 - Assignment for Film and MSFM Group Essay (Intro – conflict – side’s of conflict – conflict’s resolution – how conflict illuminates meaning of the work – conclusion) – This requires 4 group members total. Analyze a conflict of a character. Notice how their mind is pulled in conflicting directions by compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, influences, attitudes, perspectives, and cultures. In a well-organized essay, identify each side of the conflict and examine the reasons for the conflict, the conflict’s resolution, and how this conflict illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole. Reality vs. Expectations, People vs. People, etc.

5 - Rubric Scoring Criteria Exemplary Proficient Emerging Ideas Analysis is focused and appropriate. The character is explained with clarity and precise nature of the resolution and the conflict with its implications to the work as a whole. Specific words and examples used to support the position. Thorough and perceptive literary analysis is convincing.

Man’s Search for Meaning 6 - Viktor Frankl

Dr. Viktor Frankl 1905-1997 3 years of his life in concentration camps 1942-1945 Professor of both neurology and psychiatry Specialized in treatment of depression and suicide Wrote 32 books, translated into 23 languages

Logotherapy Frankl created the 3rd Viennese School of Psychology Freud: Psychoanalysis Adler: Individual Psychology Frankl: Logotherapy logos = reason/word therapy = heal

6 – Conflicts and Themes mentioned in MSFM (Discuss) Man's lack of ability to find meaning on a personal level rather than a comparative one that drives him to feel hopeless and distraught. No matter what type of suffering a person endures, as long as they hold onto their faith that everything happens for a reason, they can survive. By believing that everything happens for a reason, individuals are able to weather the storms of their lives with the strength and determination to overcome. One can conclude that society provides little more than an extraneous influence on self-image. Proper counseling, in the form of logotherapy (the word Logos is defined as "meaning"), will help the individual find the will to meaning. life holds a potential meaning under any conditions, even the most miserable ones. “An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” (Frankl 38) “Let one attempt to expose a number of the most diverse people uniformly to hunger. With the increase of the imperative urge hunger all individual differences will blur, and in their stead will appear the uniform expression of the one unstilled urge” (Freud)

GROUP WORK Draw the spectrum of philosophy and place Frankl on it On paper, please do the following: Draw the spectrum of philosophy and place Frankl on it Please also place each group member on the spectrum as well According to your assigned school of philosophy, record at least 5-10 examples of how that philosophy was manifested by the behavior in the camps
