1 Please get your SpringBoard books.

2 Bellringer… … Respond to the following quickwrite prompts in your English II spiral notebook. Your answers do not need to be in complete sentences: –What are the first words that come to mind when you hear the phrase “arranged marriage”? –What is the difference between a “love match,” which we saw in Bend It Like Beckham with Jess and Joe, and an “arranged marriage,” like we saw between Jess’ sister and her fiancé/husband? –Would you accept an arranged marriage? Why/why not? –Does a man still have to ask permission of the father to marry his daughter? –Can only the man ask the woman to marry him? Why? –Who pays for the wedding?

3 Brainstorm… –Get out a separate sheet of paper. –Title the paper “Arranged Marriages.” –Fold the paper in half to make two vertical columns. –Label one column “pros” and one column “cons.” –Brainstorm a list the of possible pros and cons of an arranged marriage and write them in the appropriate column.

4 SpringBoard… –Read “Matrimony with a Proper Stranger” on pages 84-7. –As you read, mark the text for the pros and cons of an arranged marriage according to the article. –Add the pros and cons from the article to the list you brainstormed prior to reading. –After reading the article, complete the double- bubble map for the similarities and differences in marriage customs between Bend It Like Beckham and “Marriage with a Proper Stranger.”
