7 Reflection (This reflection can be done in your journal or in your notes.) Given your understanding of the different kinds of loss, reflect on the following... What has been your most significant experience of loss? Describe what happened. How did you feel at the time of the loss? How do you feel now? What helped you in dealing with the loss? What other “losses” have you experienced in your life?

8 Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross  A psychologist and  worked with people dealing with death and loss.  Her book On Death and Dying explores the 5 Stages of Death and Dying  realized that these 5 stages can be applied to any significant experience of loss, and not just death.

11 Make another Chart Title this one “The 5 Stages” Make 4 columns. Label them: “Stage” “Characteristics” “Special Terminology” “Key word” Use the info that follows to complete your chart.

12 Denial  NATURAL and NORMAL response  Usually does not/can not last very long. Why?  a defense mechanism, protecting the person from the reality and pain of the loss until the person can understand and deal with it.

13 Anger  a NATURAL and NORMAL response to loss.  When a person begins to feel and understand the reality of the loss  Might feel angry towards... Who?  Often displaced anger - it is not really directed at the person who receives it.

14 Bargaining  ½ in reality, ½ in denial  Attempt to control or change a situation that can not be controlled or changed.  Gets exhausting  “If only...”

15 Depression  It is obvious that the loss is real  deep sadness, emptiness, and/or hopelessness.  Time is what brings a person out of this (sometimes professional help also)

16 Acceptance  loss is not forgotten  less painful in every-day life  able to look to the future with HOPE  See that life can still be meaningful, even if different

17 Some things to remember about the 5 Stages  Not every person will experience them in the same way.  A person may return to one of the stages during a particularly difficult or emotional time. Examples...

19 Group Work 1.SHARE your findings from your HW (the article). IDENTIFY the 5 Stages by putting the number of the Stage in a circle next to the paragraph where you found it. You will find some more than once. You should be able to find all 5 stages. 2.Return to your notes. As a group, come up with 3 words or short phrases that represent each stage. Fill it in, in the column labeled “Key word.”

20 8 th Period: Tear Soup The children’s book, Tear Soup, is on reserve for you to read in the Library. It should take you about 20 minutes. Please stop in and read over the next few days (before the test on ________.) The essay on your test will be about this book.

22 1. Through PRAYER we are never alone During times of loss and loneliness, prayer allows us to have the experience that we are never alone because God is ALWAYS with us. How can you pray?

25 Return to your reflection on your most significant experience of loss. Can you see yourself and your experience in the 5 Stages we discussed in class? At which stage in the process are you? Through how many stages have you already gone? Can you see others and their experiences in the 5 Stages?

26 Test 8 th Period Essay: Tear Soup is a children’s book about the experience of dealing with a loss. What images are used in the book to make the process more understandable to young people? Can you think of another children’s book that teaches a lesson? Explain.
