Welcome to Back to School Night! 3rd Grade Mrs. Slaven room 21

LET’S WORK TOGETHER I will be stressing from the first day that teaching your child is a joint responsibility. The child that excels in school most often has parents or other adult family members supporting and encouraging their learning at home. Working together I hope we can make a this a terrific year of learning for your child.

CLASS SCHEDULE 8:20 Attendance & Flag Salute 8:30 Daily Practice 9:00 Language Arts 10:00 Recess 10:20 Language Arts cont. 11:30 Math 12;15 Lunch/Recess 1:00 ELD/Writers Workshop 1:45 Social Studies/Science 2:25 Homework/ Clean-up 2:40 Dismissal

Common Core The idea is to provide deeper, richer learning to prepare students for the 21st century workforce. Allow students to think more deeply. Students are asked not just for the right answers but how they got to those answers.

A Look at Common Core Language Arts- What is new is that the discussion that follows is more in depth, and more rigorous. Who is telling the story in Charlotte’s Web? What is your point of view about Wilbur? How does Wilbur feel towards Charlotte at How is it different from Fern’s point of the end of the story? view about Wilbur? How do you know? How is it different from the narrator’s point of view? In order to be successful in this task, the student has to have listened to the teacher and engaged in the rich classroom discussion that occurs after each chapter has been read. He has to think about why Fern sees Wilbur in a different way than the Narrator does, and explain that.

Accelerated Reader Comprehension quizzes are taken after students have read a book corresponding to their reading level. 90% or better is passing. Once passing 3 quizzes they move up in levels. They also have an opportunity to move up levels when the take the Star comprehension test.

Assessments Language Arts Star comprehension test- every trimester. AR quizzes 90% and better is passing. Math Chapter tests are given every 1 to 1 1 / 2 weeks, taken on ipad. 4 cumulative tests taken throughout the school year. Standard Master Cumulative Language Arts, Reading & Math test given 3 times a year. SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) Measures student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Taken on computer.

Grades scores are as follows: % (4)Mastery 80-94% (3)Proficient 70-79% (2)Approaching Proficient 69-0% (1)Below Proficient-test will be sent home to be signed by a parent. Please, review the test with your child, sign and return it to school.

Report Card Students will receive a report card three times a year. The grades are based on daily work, tests and homework. Our report card is based on the Common Core State Standards.

Homework Students are responsible for recording, completing and turning in homework assignments on a daily basis. Please take the time to check you child’s homework notebook as I do ask for parent signature on incomplete assignments. Students are also responsible for recording reading on “Reading Logs”. “Reading Logs” are to be kept in homework folder to be checked off daily. * Work is to be neat and complete. Done by your child in your child’s writing.

Student of the Month Two students each Month are selected. Selection is based on: Citizenship- the student(s) who displays traits from “Character Counts”. Scholar- completing class work as well as homework on time, neatly and to the best of their ability.

Attendance Absences need to be cleared right Away. Please, call the office the day of the absence or send a note with your child the very next day he/she returns to school. Everyday attendance is important for your child to be successful! *Be on time and stay for the Entire school day! 8:15am-2:40pm
