Timbuktu/Mali ◊Timbuktu is an ancient city in Mali. ◊“Tin” means “place” and “buktu” a name of an old Malian woman known for her honest. ◊Populated with Songhay and other places and it’s about 15km north of the Niger River. ◊Was first built up by the nomadic Tuareg. Songhay ◊After the decline of Mali, the Geo Kingdom re-powered itself as the major kingdom in Sahel. Songhay kingdom in the region of Gao had been existing since the 11 th century, but came in under control of Mali in 13 th century.
