BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - Parent Information About Band Classes

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL INSTRUMENT: Please bring your band instrument to school each day and take it home after school to practice. Band meets everyday. Label your instrument case with your name, address and phone number. TEXTBOOKS: Tradition of Excellence, Book Two Tradition of Excellence: Technique and Musicianship SUPPLIES: Please keep in instrument case a cleaning cloth, reeds for woodwinds, valve oil for brasses (slide cream for trombones) and mallets/sticks for percussion. Always keep a pencil in your folder..

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Bring all above materials each band day Prepare for class by practicing music assignments and completing written assignments. Be on time and participate in rehearsal each day. Concerts: prepare for and participate in all band concerts. Fill out and hand in “Band Logs” (due Thursdays) Use your assigned band room locker and combination lock.

CONCERNS FOR PARENTS Assignments: check web back pack ( and band logs for assignments. Practice: set up time schedule for home practice and monitor. 20 minutes five times a week is satisfactory to prepare for class. Band Log: sign weekly. Private lessons: please encourage. (The quickest way your child will improve) Repair: be certain instrument is in good playing condition. Concerts: please mark band concerts dates on your calendar. Communication: please call Mr. Setty at Indian Hills Middle School or

INDIAN HILLS CONCERTS School concerts will be in the gymnasium at Indian Hills. The East Area Festival will be at SM East (in the big gym). Please be at the place of the performance one-half hour early. The entire concert involves everyone; please do not ask to come late or to leave early. Attendance at all concerts in which your band performs is a basic requirement for this class Concert responsibility also includes mode of dress and neatness at performance. Ladies: Dress, skirt or slacks and blouse; NO BLUE JEANS Gentlemen:Dress shirt and tie with dress slacks and dark shoes; NO BLUE JEANS

INSTRUMENTS Instruments are needed daily; if the instrument is in the shop for repair, please bring a note from home; always bring your folder. If you are physically not able to play bring a note form your doctor, parent or school nurse. Always bring your instrument and folder. LABEL you instrument case with name, address and phone number. LABEL you instrument case with name, address and phone number. School owned instruments are insured, but repair is the responsibility of the student. School instruments require a $50.00 fee for use during the school year. All percussionists will pay the $50.00 fee for using school instruments.

GRADING: Grades are recorded on the electronic grade book and are earned from four different categories: 40% REHEARSAL SKILLS: Class work each day; class materials, effort and contribution to group rehearsal and band logs 20% PERFORMANCE SKILLS: Playing exams over technical exercises and concert music 20% WRITTEN: Work sheet assignments and unit examinations. 20% CONCERTS: Attendance, being on time, and concert etiquette

JAZZ BAND Indian Hills Jazz Band is an after school activity. It is open to all band students, 7th and 8th grade, and has the following instrumentation: Saxophones (Alto, Tenor and Bari) Saxophones (Alto, Tenor and Bari) Trumpets Trumpets Trombones Trombones Rhythm Section (Piano, Bass, Guitar, Drumset) Rhythm Section (Piano, Bass, Guitar, Drumset) There are no auditions for is group; if your child is interested please have them come to our first rehearsal (TBA). We will rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school (3:50 – 4:35).
