Ms. McManus’ First Grade Room 214 Newsletter /3/13 Schedule Hope you had a nice 4 days off Tuesday-Art (art shirt/leave in locker) Wednesday-Library (return books) Thursday-Music Friday- extra recess *Please send a clean pair of socks with your child this week for an eraser for their white boards. We are officially done with Aimsweb testing. I am very impressed with how hard each student worked on the testing. They were very involved and it is a great way to really get to know your children one on one. You also received a set of Language Arts and Math I can statements for you to keep at home. This week you will get them for Social Studies and Science. We are beginning our intervention period next week. What’s Happening : Fundations: finishing letter sounds and formation (test next week) Reading: listening and responding to stories to make text to self connections. vocabulary words from last weeks story When I was Little. Writing: listening and discuss good writing. Working on sentence structure: spaces, capital, left to write, punctuation. Math- continuing writing and counting numbers Comparing sets with less, more, greater than fewer. Number patterns. Calendar math-counting, patterning, time, graphing, number bonds, story problems, math computation. Social Studies- Rules/Being a good friend/manners I Can… ~I can ask and answer questions about a text I have read. ~I can understand how a book is organized. ~ I can take part in group discussions. ~I can write with others. ~ I can print all uppercase and lowercase letters. ~I can count to 120. We will focus on these for a few weeks. Reminders: Last week your child brought home the fundraiser information. Please consider participating as it is the only PTO fundrasier. If our class has 50% participation we get an incentive as a class. Also Highlights magazine/Puzzle sheets came home, please send it back even if you choose no. We are planning a few field trips for this fall, more info to come.

Ms. McManus’ First Grade Room 214 Newsletter /3/13 Class Rules: Please review the classroom rules and discuss with your children. A behavior/discipline contract will be coming home this week. It is important to let them know and understand what is expected by all. We have gone over them in the classroom but reviewing them at home is a valuable way for them to reiterate what they know and have learned. Bully-Proofing Kettering: This year Kettering will be teaching staff, students, and parents about bullying. The speaker will be Jim Bisseneus. On September 10 th from 6:30-8:30 at Fairmont High School, families will be trained in a parent meeting. This is a great opportunity to learn as a family and help explain to your child. On September 13 th 1 st grade will visit FHS to learn more as a grade level. Both days will be a great experience for all. Please discuss this idea with your children. The more we get involved, the better for all of us. I Can… ~ I can follow rules for discussions. ~I can talk with others. ~ I can speak and write in complete sentences. ~ I can make telling and asking sentences. ~ I can punctuate sentences. ~ I can revise and edit my writing. ~ I can publish my writing. We will focus on these for a few weeks. Reminders: We will be using our Primary Journals this week. If you have not sent one in please get one ASAP. They are available at Wal-Mart in stationary across from electronics. We also will be going to the computer lab so headphones will be helpful. Please plan to pack a lunch on Sept. 13 th. If this is not possible sacked lunches will be available from the cafeteria.
