4/21/14 Class Search/ Catalog- Mobile Project Student Personas and Feature Priority Matrix

Student Focus Groups On Friday 4/18/2014, interviews were conducted with 12 UTO and Admission student workers, representing a cross section of the campus community. Year In School  2 Seniors  3 Juniors (1 online transfer student)  4 Sophomores  3 Grad Students Major  Liberal Art Studies  Interdisciplinary Studies  Higher Education  Philosophy  Finance  Computer Science

During our conversations, we identified 4 distinct student personas. { New Freshman Upper Classman Online Student The Non- Traditional Student

persona I: The New Freshman

Background: These students have very little understanding of the university system when they first attend classes, but have many rigorous academic requirements placed on them through their field of study. Ease of use of technology is very important in finding the classes that they need. Most Value: Class Title Days and Times of Classes Ability to find Critical Tracking Classes Ability to find classes that fulfill General Studies requirements Least Value: Specific Professors Units Class Number

Persona 2: The Upper Classman

Background: This persona can refer to both undergraduate upper classmen and also graduate students. Individuals who are apart of this persona have over time become very familiar with the key information that helps students get into or override into the classes they need. Most Value: Professors Class Title Days and Times of Classes Prerequisites Number of Seats Class Syllabus Least Value: Lower Division requirements Units

Persona 3: The Online Student

Background: For the Online Student, time is of the essence! Often students who pursue their education online, are looking for flexibility that will not interfere with the demands that come with having a full time job and family. They also want to learn as much as they can prior to registering for a class. Most Value: Session Dates Class Title Ability to find classes that fulfill DARS requirements Syllabus Least Value: Days and Times of Classes Location Professor

Persona 4: The Non-Traditional Student

Background: These students do not really fit in any particular mode at the University. Their chosen degree, location of study, or the fact that they have transferred schools make it virtually impossible for them to fulfill all their degree requirements at one campus. Knowing as much information about a potential class is key for these students. Most Value: Location Class Title Days and Times of Classes Specific Professors Ability to find Critical Tracking Classes Ability to find classes that fulfill General Studies requirements Least Value: Units Class Number

Persona 1Persona 2Persona 3Persona 4 Weight Weighted Sum Class # Course Title Units Days Time Dates Location 2-70 Open Seats GS Instructor

Details Page Overall Findings: While the Details Page is very helpful (particularly for those supporting students in the Admissions office), overall, the information is under utilized by all student populations. During the interview process, the following fields of information were highlighted as the most valued and least valued information: Most Valued Course description Professors Enrollment Requirements/Prerequisites Fees (mostly for grad students) Syllabus Books Dates of Class (only for dynamically dated classes) Department offering the Class (only when a student needs to override into a class) Seating Details Least Valued Repeatable for no Credit General Studies Component Session Type Last day to enroll in class Last day to Drop or Withdraw Units Class Meeting Details (all the information is provided on the Results page) Instruction Mode
