Answer the Following What are you most likely to use the computer for? Who else in your household will use the computer? How are they likely to use the computer? Where do you expect to put the computer? Save your document. Youll need it later!

Where & How to Purchase a Computer

Peripherals You NEED A Mouse A Keyboard These are the only peripherals you NEED.

Peripherals You MAY WANT External Speakers – Or use the internal speakers that are built into your computer. Surge Protector Power Strip Digital Camera Digital Video Camera External hard drive Flash drive (aka thumb drive or jump drive) Scanner – Or use scanner at a public lab. Printer – Or print documents at a public lab. Or print photos using a photo printing service (cvs.com, shutterfly.com, etc)

The Real Costs of a Printer Printers are cheap. Sometimes less than $100. Why? Manufacturers of printers make a profit through sale of the ink. Not the printers! Only print when absolutely necessary.

Computer Sales People May: Try to sell you additional hardware (such as the peripherals we discussed). Try to sell you an extended warranty that may cost half as much as the computer. Try to sell you an antivirus program (but Microsoft and AVG offer very solid free versions).
