Components of a computer system. Learning Objectives What is a computer system? What are the main components of a computer system? How are they all connected? What are the different types of computer?

Components of a computer system. A computer system

Components of a computer system. A computer system is... A collection of input and output devices connected to a computing device which will perform either general tasks or specific tasks. Anything that is connected to or runs on a computer is part of the computer system!

Components of a computer system. General systems Vs Specific General computer systems – These are systems which we are used to. We can play games, do work, chat with friends or surf the web! Specific computer systems – These are systems which will only perform a single task. For example a airplane computer system or a shops till.

Components of a computer system. Micro-processor A Micro-processor is a multipurpose chip which can sequences of instructions known as software The bulk of the processor is padding and connections. The actually chip (known as the die) is the small square in the centre.

It can run software (like a mobile phone application) Components of a computer system. What is the purpose of a micro-processor It can run software (like a mobile phone application) Devices which use a micro-processor normally need to perform lots of instructions in order to do a single task. For example a sky+ box would need to be able to schedule recordings. This would be done by the micro-processor.

Components of a computer system. Activity Make a list of all of the devices at home which contain a micro-processor. Next to each device state what the software on the device does!!

Components of a computer system. Activity Create a PowerPoint presentation. This will be used to revise. Create a slide explaining – 1. What is a system? 2. A general purpose system. 3. A specific purpose system. 4. What is a micro-processor. You may wish to link to some of the videos used in lesson or websites you find to help DO NOT COPY AND PASTE!!!
