The Water Cycle

Evaporation is when water is heated up and turns into vapour or steam. The sun heats up water on the Earth. The vapour or steam leaves a body of water and rises into the air. An example of evaporation is when water is heated in a kettle and you can see the steam rising.

Condensation is when the water vapour or steam cools down and turns back into a liquid; forming clouds, fog, or dew. An example of condensation is when the outside of your water bottle or glass becomes wet.

Precipitation is when clouds become to full of liquid and cannot hold anymore. The clouds get heavy and the water falls back to earth in the form of rain, hail or snow.

Collection is when water falls back to Earth from the clouds as precipitation and is collected somewhere on Earth including the ground or bodies of water. When it ends up on land it may soak into the earth and become part of ground water. Ground water is what we use in our wells for drinking water. The water may also be soaked into plants leaves and roots; this is called transpiration. Water may collect on the surface of the Earth and flow back into rivers, lakes or oceans. This is called run-off and it refills the Earth’s bodies of water, which allows the water cycle to continue and never end.
