Presentation transcript:

Bell Ringer: (100 points) Find a full-page ad in one of the new magazines (in the white boxes). Carefully cut it out. Write down answers to these questions on the office paper I gave you: 1. Describe the ad briefly. 2. Where are the main 2 or 3 focal points? (where does your eye go?) 3. Describe how the ad plays on your emotions: -How does the ad make someone want to buy the product? -Is the product a human necessity needed for day-to day living, or an optional luxury item? -Could the ad make someone feel inadequate or insecure – if so, how might purchasing the product make them feel better? -Why might you want to posses the product, or be the person in the ad?

The focal points are the man and woman, the white horses, and the name of the product.

A different version of this ad makes it even more clear what the source of this romantic fantasy is, if you buy the product.

John Heartfield Appeasement 1930 collage (photomontage) John Heartfield ( ) was a German artist who was a pioneer in the use of art as political protest. Working in Germany and Czechoslovakia between the two world wars, he is best known for images that protested the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party. He would cut up photographs and re-glue them into mocking satirical images using a collage technique called “photomontage”. The resulting images could then be reproduced in magazines or posters to have a wide impact. He died in 1968.

Main Project: Advertisement Objective: Analyze how visual images can manipulate consumers, and then visually counter those images by changing and manipulating the image. “Deconstruct” your ad. From the cut-up magazines, find words and images to glue down onto your ad that will: -change its meaning or mood, -critique it, -make fun of it, -or make it seem absurd. -In short, change your ad into something with a completely different feeling. Keep it school-appropriate. You should add a minimum of 10 to 15 images to the existing page – the more you add, the richer the effect.
