2nd Modern Housing SWG Meeting Presentation of activities LARCO ICOS Laboratory, Italy RESEARCH LABORATORY AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN COSTRUCTION Venice, February 16th, 2011

is a part of the RI.COS Consortium - Research and Technology Transfer in Construction Tha partners of Ri.COS Consortium are: Foundation of the Bologna Credit Union, Bologna, Italy ICIE- Cooperative Institute for Innovation - Bologna, Rome, Italy LARCO ICOS LABORATORY

ICIE Cooperative Institute for Innovation - Bologna, Rome, Naples (Italy) ICIE is the research unit of the Lega’s Co-operatives (National League of co-operatives and mutual aid societies) Areas of expertise: Applied Research (mainly in the construction sector) Experimental development Technology Transfer Number of researchers: 30

The Laboratory conducts industrial research and offers a range of professional services including technology transfer LARCO ICOS LABORATORY The Laboratory projects can follow two main directions: Building to the high standard Sharing knowledge Number of researchers: 20

Larco Icos Laboratory Areas of expertise: Highly energy efficient building components (insulation, cladding, building materials, electrical, plumbing and heating systems, windows and doors); Building and systems maintenance; Innovative materials and components made from renewable resources; Electrical, plumbing and heating systems and building automation systems; Sustainability assessment systems; Advanced ICT systems and instruments for the improvement of process efficiency Technology transfer.

OBJECTIVES: pilot laboratory for specific components innovative brick components with hight level of insulation EXPECTED RESULTS: realisation of a "flexible" pilot laboratory, for research and development of innovative brick components, with reference, as a priority, to the improvement of the thermal performance of the individual components. PROJECT 1 - TECNOLATER (Center of competence in Brick and Energy technology in construction)

PROJECT 2 - LABSIII (Laboratory of envelope-plant integrated systems) EXPECTED RESULTS: solutions of light covering systems which integrate energy efficiency technologies and renewable energies through dry assembling processes and prefabrication in the plant premises OBJECTIVES: Define and develop roof systems, developing equipment solutions integrated in the roof system and fed by renewable energy sources

OBJECTIVES: To allow enterprises to make a dimensional shift and to answer the market in more structured and efficacious terms; To propose innovative solutions for renovation actions more oriented to efficiency, safety and energy-environmental sustainability; To offer the managers of the facilities the opportunity to enhance their touristic offer, also within high level circuits. PROJECT 3 - REETI (Ecologically Sustainable renewal of the Existing Tourist and reception Building Patrimony)

RESULTS: Establishment of a new company able to work on medium-big size contracts which the single enterprises would not be able to manage; Acquisition of a technical-organisational competence level which will allow the Network to candidate itself as a highly qualified subject in the market with great potential interest; Capacity to guarantee the fulfillement of works in a given fixed and limited period of time; Energy, environmental and seismic renovation of a new generation of touristic buildings able to address the new touristic demand. PROJECT 3 - REETI

PROJECT 4 - RIT (Renovation Infrastructure territory) OBJECTIVES: integrate a series of activities that the 4 SMEs perform at present in total autonomy adopt an innovative organisational methodology and operative tools take common decisions with the purpose to design, carry out and manufacture goods or services, develop new processes, shorten the times of organisational innovation and of taking root in the reference market, also exchanging information, knowledge and resources

PROJECT 4 - RIT (Renovation Infrastructure territory) EXPECTED RESULTS: to establish a new entity (R.I.T.) able to develop proposals relevant to works of territorial renovation and infrastructuring enhancing the production potential of the Network identify procedures and systems for the “sustainable” qualification of the infrastructuring works (primary and secondary urbanisation works, etc.) in the different phases of the construction process (project, realization, management and maintenance) Create and define a “sustainibility label”.

The approach of technology transfer Transfer technology and knowledge from research to the regional production sector (construction industry) STRATEGIES Demonstrating innovation CONTEXT Weakness of the system: Lack of promotion of research initiatives Difficult collaboration between building companies and research Involving operators Efficient production chain of Emilia Romagna Negative economic forecast

The informal network created by the LarcoIcos Laboratory is an ever-growing system of professional relationships Creation of a regional construction cluster Map of trend of innovative technologies Easier access to research and demonstration programmes Taking part in the National Construction Technology Platform (PTIC) Adopting the model of european ECTP LARCO ICOS as reference point The informal networks

TTO Professionals (architects and engineers) Construction companies Suppliers Associations Universities Public bodies Training structures & education Customers and end users Financial Institutions Installers Producers Construction chain. Model of the traditional relationship system Low level of flexibility in the communication system Business organisation and relationship are fragmentary The flow of information is not complete and continuous The role of TTO is secondary (TTO: Technology Transfer Organisations) From “Innovation and technological transfer in the construction sector” by Giulia Landriscina, IKINET Forum 2007

TTO Universities Suppliers Producers Professionals (architects and engineers) Construction companies Public bodies Associations Customers & end users Installers Financial Institutions Training structures & education Construction chain. Model of a new relationship system Flexibility in the communication system (informal and direct) Promotion of new reciprocal contacts (network) Continuous feed back on needs and interest of stakeholders From “Innovation and technological transfer in the construction sector” by Giulia Landriscina, IKINET Forum 2007
