Weighing In… Are the diet pills worth the risk?
Presentation transcript:

People who lead a busy life and don’t have the time to eat right and exercise daily are given the chance to diet while still maintaining a busy schedule. Diet pills are great for people who have a hard time stopping eating. They allow you to keep eating while still losing the weight. They are very convenient Natural diet pills are far more gentle and work on holistic principles, rather than the 'golden bullet' approach of traditional medicines.

Early 1930s, two young physicians from Stanford University began reporting the amazing ability of the chemical dinitrophenol to speed up your metabolism, therefore making you lose weight fast. By 1934, doctors became worried about the amount of people that had gone on the drug. They estimated 100,000 people in less than a year. There were two deaths caused by the drug and after intense investigation the U.S Office of Drug Control was able to take it off the market. They found that people became very addicted to this drug. After dinitrophenol, in the 1950s, scientists were looking at ways to decrease the appetite for weight loss. They did this by using Amphetamines ( a drug that stimulates the central nervous system). By the 1970s, the amount of people who abused the drug and came addicted convince the FDA to restrict the use of amphetamines for weight loss to a few weeks at a time, making the drugs fall out of favor. Ephedra is a species of plant that has been used in medicine for nearly 5000 years.

after the 1970s, weight loss drugs fell out of popularity. In 1992, researchers found a way of combining regular exercise and a pill made with a combination of two kinds of appetite suppressants, fenfluramine and phentermine. Users lost about 16% of their initial weight. In 1996, this diet pill was approved by the FDA as the first medicine approved for treatment of obesity in 23 years. Within 3 months, doctor’s were writing 85,000 prescriptions a week. By 1997, doctors reported unusual heart valve trouble in women taking this diet pill. Within a month the FDA removed the drug off the market. In 2003, there was reported deaths from the use of the new diet pill containing the supplement ephedra. By 2004, the FDA officially banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedra.

The abuse is unfortunately very common because of how easily accessible the pills are to everyone including minors. They are present in most grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and health food stores. They are highly addictive, and it is very common for individuals to take just a few in the beginning and then gradually become highly addicted and dependant on the diet pills. 1 in 5 young women are said to be on diet pills according to the University of Minnesota. They conducted an experiment, and a study of 2,500 femals over a course of five years. They were shocked to find that the diet pill intake increased from 7 to 14 percent.

Public education Gyms should promote exercise and not diet pills Promote protein instead of diet pills Showing the awareness and side effects Should be prescribed by doctors and not available over the counter. Minors aren’t able to buy them, you must be 18 Make them very expensive so less people buy and use them. “I love my curves, and the way I look. It’s natural.” Healthy?

Potential for dependence. Some diet pills, especially the stimulant-based diet pills, are habit-forming and as such can be abused. Metabolism disruption. As you reduce your caloric intake, your metabolism also slows down. Can increase risk of psychological effects i.e. Anxiety and depression. Inhibit the absorption of fats are gastrointestinal side effects i.e oily spotting, flatus with discharge, fecal urgency Some diet pills are so bad for your body they may result in death. It is getting worse and worse for young teenage girls/boys to start abusing diet pills because of the lack of awareness.
