Research & Library Etiquette Making the Most of Our Library Time

A reminder about assignments…  Most of us have become complacent about our assignments. Students are treating them like they are just a way to earn points instead of activities to learn about the topics we are studying.  Assignments need to be completed before the test or they lose their value.  Our class policies stated that late work would lose value. From now on this policy will be followed to encourage students to complete their work on time. All assignments will lose points if they are not turned in by the day we take a chapter test.  From this point on, if a student wants to take a test again they need to show that they have completed the learning activities from the unit before that will happen.  Most of us have become complacent about our assignments. Neatness is also an increasing issue…  Many students are turning in papers that are so crumpled, torn, and use such poor handwriting that they are nearly unreadable.  The Quality Work Rubic will be used to assess whether a paper is ready to be turned in.  Papers that have been damaged due to being shoved into backpacks, folded and stuffed into pockets, or that obviously have been so rushed that they are difficult to read will be put in the Not Ready Box until students redo them.  Many students are turning in papers that are so crumpled, torn, and use such poor handwriting that they are nearly unreadable.

Courtesy and Respect in the Classroom  Taking care of your work shows that you respect yourself and you take pride in what you do.  It also shows that you want your teachers, peers, future employers, etc. to take your work seriously.  Taking care of your work shows that you respect yourself and you take pride in what you do.  It also shows that you want your teachers, peers, future employers, etc. to take your work seriously.

Today we will learn about…  History Objective: Students will improve their research skills.  Language Objective: Students will read for key words for their topics and write research questions that they would like to answer during their research time.

Research - Where to start?  After you select your topic, you need to do several things before you are ready to go into the library.  First you need a basic background source for your topic. Your text book is a place to start.  Let’s pretend that our topic is the Bear River Massacre and turn to page 170 in the book to learn more about it.

Focus your research by asking questions.  Once you have a basic idea of what happened, then you can start to ask questions.  Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?  Also ask follow up questions?  Ex. What was Colonel Conner doing in Utah?  Ex. What happened to the Shoshone survivors?  Once you have a basic idea of what happened, then you can start to ask questions.  Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?  Also ask follow up questions?  Ex. What was Colonel Conner doing in Utah?  Ex. What happened to the Shoshone survivors?

Key words help you find the information you need.  Identifying key words will help you find the information in various sources that you need to answer your questions.  Key words will help you find sections of books, pictures, and other sources that have to do with your topic.  Typically key words will be proper nouns.

Bear River Massacre Key Words  Bear River Massacre  Battle of Bear River  Native Americans /Indians  Shoshone  Sagwitch Timbimboo  Cache Valley  Bear River Massacre  Battle of Bear River  Native Americans /Indians  Shoshone  Sagwitch Timbimboo  Cache Valley  Colonel Patrick Connor  Box Elder  Idaho  Idaho Enterprise  Brigham D. Madsen  Preston, Idaho  Bear River

Key Words  Use the key words to search  in the indexes of books  on the library search page  to search for pictures  or where ever you are looking for information  Use the key words to search  in the indexes of books  on the library search page  to search for pictures  or where ever you are looking for information

When you find a source with good information…  Take a blue card and fill out the bibliography information.  Then take notes on the information that you found that answers questions that you want to have answered.  Be sure to put your name and hour on the cards so that they can be returned to you if they are lost.

Library Etiquette  We will be in the library for the next three day.  We are there to work.  You have a limited amount of time to search.  You will be filling out research cards that will be used to create your project.  We will be in the library for the next three day.  We are there to work.  You have a limited amount of time to search.  You will be filling out research cards that will be used to create your project.  There will be consequences if you are not on task.  You will start out with 10 points per day.  Mrs. Barlow, her aid, or I can take points for off-task behavior.  Persistent bad behavior will result in being removed from the library.

Homework for tomorrow  Complete the first two sections of your worksheet.  Write eight questions for your research topic.  Write at least six key words for your topic.  Come to class tomorrow ready to go to the library.  Know where your worksheets are, bring them to class with a pencil, leave your backpack in your locker.  You cannot bring backpacks to the library, you will have to wait for me to get back to unlock the door if they are in the classroom, and any left in the hallway could be searched, stolen or end up in lost and found.  Complete the first two sections of your worksheet.
