Presentation transcript:

Nash- AP Chemistry Chemistry Podcasting- what is it and why? I want to explain what you should expect and how things will work this year.

A little about me… BA in Chem., MA in Exercise Science and MA in Natural Science 14+ years teaching chemistry 5+ years experience podcasting Take rigor and relevance very seriously Want to use best practice to ensure every student learns in my class

AP Chem and CU Succeed Two options to get College Credit High expectations, must have good work ethic and be willing to put the time in Need Podcast notebook and Lab Note book Expected to put in 5hr/week outside of class… Labs early or late? Podcasts at home?

Why??!!?? Two BIG Reasons First- Student usually have some questions during lecture- we will go over these at the beginning of each class, BUT they usually have the most questions when doing the work- usually done at home on their own, now they can do that work in class when I’m right there to help and guide. Also, less in class lecture frees up more time for more labs and activities!

Second- Pacing for notes Has always been a struggle, some students take very few notes and want to move fast, some take lots of notes and need a much slower pace. Now they can do the notes at their pace! They can also stop me, rewind me and replay me as much as needed! Review? Can watch from anywhere they get internet- home, phone, iPod!

So you don’t teach? Wrong- I just don’t use the valuable class time to lecture as much- we will begin class by answering questions over the podcasts, and I will be able to spend more time with individual student answering questions and improving understanding I will “lecture” anytime concepts or ideas are not making sense or need clarification to most students

How will this effect grading? Students will be expected to have a “podcast” notebook where they will need to take some notes, write down questions, and answer sample questions that will be graded randomly for credit Will keep students accountable for watching the podcast Will now have more lab and activity grades!

That’s about it… Remember all podcast are available online and can be accessed from links on my website or from Please or call anytime you have questions or concerns!
