Important Reports 2008 OECD Improving School Leadership 2009 MacKinsey Redefining School Leadership responsibilities 2010 Capturing the leadership premium How the world’s top school systems are building leadership capacity for the future OECD Programme for International Student Assesment (PISA) 2009

OECD Study on school leadership 22 participating countries Focus on: ‘International activities to help policy-makers compare - approaches to school leadership policy-- identify innovative practices and provide policy options for action

Why leadership is important? New reform agenda in many countries with reforms aimed at improving learning outcome recognising the complexity of learning New regulatory models with feedback, incentives, adaptive capacity every school is an adaptive organisation…

Key Conclusions We need a new definition of leadership (Individual) Principalship vs. (Distributed) leadership Within broader perimeters than a single school…and with partnership between schools and associated agencies to address an agenda beyond just education Where School leadership matters, because Differences between schools Surveys based on simplistic models do now show significant impact… However, more complex impact and outcome models do confirm the strong influence of schools in the community

With an ageing profile for school leadership And, an increasingly ‘unattractive’ job for younger members of staff But… is seen as an increasingly complex and demanding job Becoming less attractive as a career option

Age Profiling
