Study Away Information Parent and Family Weekend Friday, November 6, 2009 Sponsored by the Office of Study Away

Study Away Oberlin College Approximately 150 students each semester study away from Oberlin on approved programs. Between 20 and 30 of these are on full-year programs. Over 500 students spent time abroad last year during the winter term, semester, or summer—about 200 of these during the winter term.

Winter Term International Group Projects l May be organized and led by faculty, volunteers or students l Wide range of topics including service learning, performance tours, academic field work, and language immersion l Additional costs for international Winter Term projects ranges from $600-$2000

Sample Winter Term 2010 Projects l Guatemala Delegation: A faculty led project which focuses on familiarizing students with the challenges faced by the rural indigenous people of Guatemala. l Immigration Aid in Francophone Belgium: A student led project wherein students use their French languages skills while volunteering in a refugee center. l WT in Guadalajara Mexico: A faculty led program focusing on Spanish language study and cultural immersion. l Oberlin Jazz in China: A student led project in which conservatory students will travel to China to explore and develop Oberlin’s connection to the developing jazz scene in that country.

Choosing a study away program Begin by defining goals for time away (language acquisition, connection to major, geographic location, etc.) Speak with academic advisor or come to the Study Away Office (Peters 205) for further help including individual advising Search the Study Away Library or online for information about specific programsonline Look at evaluations from previous Oberlin participants - available in the Study Away Office

Oberlin’s Study Away Options Two Oberlin categories for studying away: 1. Enrolled Not in Residence (ENR) 2. Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA)

Enrolled Not in Residence (ENR) Danenberg Oberlin-in-London Program Studies in Spain at the University of Cordoba oberlin.edu/hispanic/study_away.html oberlin.edu/hispanic/study_away.html Summer ENR: Oberlin-in-Europe Summer ENR: Oberlin in Italy All programs earn Oberlin credit (not considered transfer credit) For semester programs Oberlin tuition is charged; financial aid applies Application made through individual program office (not Study Away Office )

Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA) 1. Consortial Programs of the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA) or the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Consortial Programs 2. Oberlin Affiliated Programs Oberlin Affiliated Programs 3. Non-affiliated Programs

Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA) Requirements Completion of at least two semesters at Oberlin Major officially declared Must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 12 credits) while on the program; credits transfer but grades do not Educational reasons for going Allow for on time completion of graduation requirements Seniors have special restrictions

Two Steps for Academic Leave process Apply to Oberlin for Academic Leave of Absence Apply to Study Away Program (some programs have early application deadlines) Usually requires academic recommendation, transcript, study away advisor recommendation and application

Academic Leave of Absence(ALOA) Application Online Academic Leave Application. Requires password requested in advance from Study Away Office. For Fall 2010, Spring 2011 or full-year , deadline is... Monday, March 15, 2010

Consortial and Oberlin Affiliated Programs Have been approved by Oberlin department or program and the Off-Campus Study Committee Oberlin need-based and merit financial aid and federal aid will apply if qualified Transfer credit approved more easily

Non-affiliated programs Not specifically approved by an Oberlin department or program Only Federal financial aid will apply to the program cost if qualified Approval for ALOA and transfer of credit may be more difficult Petition process for aid to transfer is rigorous if undertaken; student should have an affiliated program as back up

Financing Study Away For most programs, the program fees are charged (not Oberlin tuition) Study Away fee is currently $1,275 per program Family contribution is still expected On ENR semester programs (London and PRESHCO), Associated Kyoto Program, and Puebla program, Oberlin tuition and fees apply Oberlin Affiliated programs allow Oberlin and Federal aid to apply to the program depending on program costs Non-affiliated programs allow federal aid to apply if student qualifies Some programs require a Consortium Agreement in order for aid to transfer For answers to specific financial questions, contact the Office of Financial Aid Outside scholarships? Look at specific program and
