Assignment #3 Critical Reflection based on your November Practicum Rationale for the assignment? You will be asked to critically reflect on your practice throughout your career (twice during your first year of employment) Have a look at the posted exemplars 3-5 pages, double-spaced, due on the week of January 12th 2009 You have two structural choices when writing your reflection: Free Flow Entry/Critical Incident Analysis Both choices examine an issue, concept, event or feeling You are drawing Personal Meaning from the event Essentially, what you have learned from the experience The Critical Incident Analysis is more structure (Your writing is broken down into the following paragraphs: The Context, The Incident, The Analysis and Your Learning) 20 marks

Topics for your Critical Reflection? Students have written about: Classroom management issues, Lesson Planning Difficulties, Assessment Dilemmas, A problematic relationship with ones A.T., Programming for the I.E.P.’d child, Teaching Split-Grades, Collegiality Issues, The Staffroom, Making a “break-through” with a difficult student, Teacher stress, The Curriculum etc. Thoughts?

Student Presentations Rationale for the Assignment?- You will be asked to present material to your staff (From PD/PA days) 25 marks (Check the rubric given in the syllabus and the student examples from last year that will be passed around) Seminars begin on the week of January 19 th minute presentation per session or scheduled class 4-6 students per group (a must!) 50 minutes (includes presentation and discussion time) Suggested Seminar topics have been provided for you You may provide a seminar that’s not listed on the syllabus (please see me if you decide to do this) We can meet before your presentation, if you’d like (Office Hours) Please distribute an e-copy summary of your work to your peers (collegiality)-a summary pamphlet is a good idea. I would like a copy of your pamphlet summary before your presentation begins References must be included Students must provide their own photocopying for the group Please provide a peer feedback form for group assessment (see examples provide)

Presentations (2) I will circulate a class schedule and sign up sheet with your section rep. We must determine, before the last class in December: A. Groups (Who’s in your group? 4-6 people) B. Topic? C. Order of presentations? D. The order of your presentations will be determined by a lottery (first second, third etc.) Please model this with your class A lottery reinforces the ideas of fairness, equity and probability in math Fewer parental/student complaints regarding presentation order, order of classroom speeches etc. Thoughts? Questions?

Determining Your Philosophy of Education- Survey CLASS WORK/DISCUSSION PERIOD Use this time to look over the survey and the questions presented Complete the survey and tally your scores and how they align with the theories presented Use this survey and the writing guideline provided to you to help facilitate your writing of your philosophy of education/A.P.A. and referencing is not necessary! Can you see evidence of your philosophy of education in your classroom work as a teacher? How so? Please have a look at the examples of previous student seminar work and pamphlets that are being circulated throughout the classroom……consider your presentation groups and your topic

Using Film in the J/I Classroom Using film is part of the Language Arts Curriculum Taps into M.I.’s (endless learning opportunities) There will be students who will dazzle you with their insight and depth analysis Cross curricular in nature Projects, reflections, (both written and orally), problem solving, art, drama, critical thinking etc. If you show a film, it must be linked to the curriculum It’s not merely for entertainment purposes! Select films that are board approved (see your Librarian for a film list) Pre-screen the film and predetermine your line of questioning Process? Read the questions over with your students before showing the film (Guided, shared, modeled reading opportunities here) Make sure the students have the questions in front of them as they write/circulate around the room while the film is on Students take notes while they watch, stop the film if necessary Be sure to “cue” the kids to the important parts (they will need this)

Pay it Forward/Dead Poets Society Do you see elements of: Professionalism? Modeling? Transformational teaching? Transmission Style of Teaching? What’s the teacher’s role in each respective classroom? What’s the student’s role in the classroom? What do feel the teachers believe is “worth learning” or “knowing”? Examples of: Essentialism, Behaviorism, Progressivism, Existentialism, Perennialism, Reconstructionism What would be included in the respective teachers and their individual Philosophies of Education?
